Nike Extravaganza Game 2:
Santa Margarita
Destroys The Friars--(Feb. 7, 1999)
The Santa Margarita Eagles (21-2) just smoked the poor Servite Friars (12-11) by 40 points on Saturday in the second game of the day at the Nike Extravaganza IV. And we're being somewhat charitable in calling this a "game," because it was really just a huge mismatch. If there was ever a question about why high profile events shouldn't schedule D-III teams, with barely winning records at that, against defending D-II State Champions this game was the answer. Santa Margarita held Servite to just 13 first half points (4 in the first quarter and 9 in the second) while scoring 43 themselves in the first half, 20 in the first quarter and 23 in the second. This game wasn't just a mismatch, it was a blowout, an accident waiting for a place to happen.
Santa Margarita's Ryan Dwight (5'-9" Sr. G) had more points in the first half--15-- than did the entire Servite team, which as we said, struggled to hit the baker's dozen mark. Spencer Gloger and Ryan Stacey also came out shooting well in the first half with 6 each, and both shot 1.000 from the line, Stacey going 3 for 3 and Gloger going 2 for 2. Tim Rahall had 5 points in the first half and Kelly Kramer had 4.
And it wasn't just that the Eagles were shooting better than the Friars, it was a stifling defense which allowed Servite to get off only 14 shots from the field in the first half, and which forced 15 first half turnovers to just 5 for Santa Margarita. It also didn't hurt that the Eagles got a little help from the refs, who only sent Servite to the line twice in the first half, while allowing 12 free-throw attempts for the Eagles, and before the half, Santa Margarita was in double-bonus, while just committing 6 team fouls itself. Santa Margarita's depth also showed, as they had 11 points off the bench in the first half to Servite's 2. For Servite, Evan Friedl (6'-4" Sr. SG/SF) was the lone bright spot in the scoring department with 5; Ted Ranzan (6'-6" Sr. F) had 4 points, while Chris Bobolet (6'-3" Jr. SG/SF) and Andrew Moore (5'-1" Sr. G) each had 2 points. The Eagles also out rebounded the Friars 9 to 4 in the first half.
And if you thought the first half was bad, it didn't get a lot better in the second half either. While the scoring was a bit less lopsided in the third quarter, which Servite only being outscored by 5 points, 10-15 and just by five again in the fourth, 18-13, there was still no way that the Friars were going to make up for what had to be one of their worst first half performances of the year. Rodel Lizan (5'-8" Jr. G) did manage 5 points in and Bobolet hit 12 more in the second half, but it was too little, as the Eagles had four players finish in double figures.
Spencer Gloger finished with 12 points, Ryan Dwight finished with 15 points and 3 assists, Tim Rahall had 12 and Ryan Stacey had 10 points. Other Santa Margarita scorers were Kelly Kramer with 6, Jeffrey Gloger with 2, Travis Smith 4, R.J. Socci 4, Brandon Rohe (Jake's younger brother) who had 3 (a three pointer, his only attempt from behind the arc), Jeff Blackburn with 4, and Ryan Maconachy who also finished with 4. For Servite, Andrew Moore finished with 2, Rodel 5, Friedl 7, Bobolet 14, and Ranzan had 8.
This game was not at all typical of what to expect at the Extravaganza, and as the folks in attendance saw for themselves, the next two games (Villa Park v. Long Beach Poly and Crenshaw v. Oceanview) would be anything but mismatches.
