Weekend High School Hoops: All The
Non-League Games--(Jan. 10, 1999)
After gathering all the league results we could find, we discovered that there were still more than a few non-league games going on Friday and Saturday. Here's everything we could find:
Banning 75, Beaumont 56-- Banning High made sure its
winter homecoming game was a happy one, routing Pass Area rival Beaumont, 75-56, in a
non league game Friday at Nicolet Middle School. Mike Davis led Banning (7-9) with 18
points. Davis scored six points during Banning's 24-9 third-period run that put the game
away. Geno Randall and Darius Stuart had 14 points apiece for Banning, which ended a
two-game losing streak.
Beaumont (7-6), which defeated Banning 78-60 Monday at Beaumont, got 16 points from
Brandon Tedrow. Adam Stephens added 12 points for the Cougars before fouling out in the
fourth period. In Monday's game, Tedrow, Adam and Aaron Stephens combined for 61 points.
But in the rematch, they scored 34. Aaron Stephens picked up his fourth foul in the third
quarter, followed by a technical, which disqualified him from the game. Banning took
advantage of Stephens' departure and scored 22 points in the fourth period. Beaumont
scoring was by Ad.Stephens 12, Wood 3, Cohn 6, Tedrow 16,
Hackney 2, Aa.Stephens 6, Nunez 8, Mendoza 2, Pastucha 1. Banning scorers were Johnson 6,
Kue 7, Davis 18, Randall 15, Foster 3, Stuart 14, Williams 7, Brownlee 4, Conner 1.

Carpinteria 69, Cate 47-- Center Tyler Matson scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Warriors to the non-league win at home. Carpinteria improved to 5-10. Ravi Mehta led Cate with 21 points, and hit three of his five 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Rams went on a 21-10 run.Ben Scott added 16 points, while Scott Lopez and John Barbieri each scored 11. Ryan Gonzalez had nine assists. Cate scorers were Mehta 21, Carradine 9, Nagano 5, Ijdakinro 4, Rao 3, Pearlmotter 2, Ting 2, McCullough 1. Totals 14 6-9 47. Carpinteria scorers were Matson 26, Scott 16, Lopez 11, Barbieri 11, Gonzalez 3, Hernandez 2. Totals 26 7-27 69. 3-point goals-Cate 7 (Mehta 5, Carradine, Nagano), Carp 6 (Lopez 3, Scott 2, Barbieri). Total fouls-Cate 23, Carp 15. Fouled out-Pearlmatter. Technical fouls-Carp coach Freitas.
Carson 65, St. Bernard 50--Senior forward Marques Duncantel scored 26 points and grabbed nine boards as the Colts (8-7) eased past the Vikings (10-6) at St. Bernard High. The Colts also got 11 points from Andre Johnson and eight points from Marquis Washington . Bernard Haynie led the Vikings (10-6) with nine points.
Cathedral City 90, Southwest 52-- Paul Heredia had all of his 14 points in the first half, and Gerald DeVance had all 12 of his in the second to lead Cathedral City (12-5) to a non-league win over El Centro Southwest. Clifton Cooper had 20 points and 6-foot-8 freshman Thomas Shewmake had seven blocks for the Lions. El Centro Southwest got 22 points and 11 rebounds from Juan Beccerra. Cathedral City scoring: Alvarez 11, DeVance 12, Cooper 20, Patrick 9, Heredia 14, Lambert 3, Green 4, Thornburg 1, Smith 1, Curtis 5, Peters 5, Shewmake 5. Southwest scoring: De La Torre 5, Aspuro 13, Romo 2, Beccerra 22, Ruiz 10. Halftime score -- Cathedral City 44-23. Three-point goals -- DeVance 3, Alvarez, Cooper, Curtis, De La Torre. Downey 63, Arroyo 38-- Senior forward Frank Velazquez
poured in 18 points and junior guard Joe Frias chipped in with 12 as the Vikings
(11-4) blew by the Knights (4-11) at Downey High.
Eisenhower 85, J.W. North 63-- Trenell Eddings had 25 points and seven assists as Rialto Eisenhower (13-3) defeated Riverside North (10-5) in a non-league game. After a fast-paced first quarter that saw numerous lead changes, Eisenhower outscored the Huskies 24-9 in the second quarter to take an 18-point lead at halftime. Eisenhower started the quarter with a 14-4 run, hitting three three-pointers in the stretch. The Eagles made 7 of 13 shots in the quarter, including 4 of 7 three-pointers. North, which was only 2 of 14 from the floor in the second quarter, never made a serious run in the second half. Eisenhower's smallest lead in the second half was 14 points.J.W. North scorers were Burnett 20, Jones 7, Mgbeke 12, Carlyle 9, Dixon 11, Gilchirst 2, Walter 2. Eisenhower scoring was by Eddings 25, Afualo 18, Wilson 17, Ang 14, Franklin 4, Rouzan 3, Sams 4. Halftime score -- Eisenhower 48-30. Three-point goals -- Jones, Dixon, Eddings 4, Afualo 4. Total fouls -- North 15, Eisenhower 15. Fouled out -- None.
Gahr 71, Cabrillo 38--Senior guard Michael Williams scored 17 points and Romalice Reed and James Perkins each made key contributions in the Gladiators' (10-6) victory over the Jaguars (8-12) at Gahr High. Reed, a sophomore forward, scored 10 points and added nine rebounds and five assists, and Perkins, a senior forward, added 11 points and eight boards off the bench. Tremayne Rankins and Joel Jeffries scored 11 points apiece for Cabrillo.
Palm Desert 70, Corona 56-- Palm Desert used a 10-0 run early in the third quarter to pull away for a non-league victory over Corona. Joey Gill scored 25 points and four steals to lead Palm Desert (5-9). Adan Fernandez added 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Palm Desert used defensive pressure to force Corona (5-10) into eight third-quarter turnovers. Corona scorers were Regalado 8, Rikansrud 12, Bello 5, Knight 9, Ibbetson 0, Valentine 6, Mutka 5, Allen 5, Neal 6. Palm Desert scorers were Gill 25, Kogus 3, Slone 6, S.Allen 2, Harasansky 7, Fernandez 19, Jackson 6, Strong 2 Halftime score -- Palm Desert 32-27. Paramount 82, Norwalk 51--The Pirates outscored the Lancers, 26-11, in the first quarter and senior forward Joel Neal had 19 points and seven rebounds in the victory at Paramount High. Ron Odom added 15 points and six rebounds for Paramount, which evened its record at 8-8.
Ramona 71, Riverside Notre Dame 48-- Leon Carr scored all nine of his points in the second quarter as Riverside Ramona (10-6) broke open its game at Riverside Notre Dame. The Rams outscored Notre Dame 26-10 in the period to take a 17-point lead. Josh Moss led Ramona with 16 points.Ramona scoring was by Moss 16, Aponte 15, Thomas 2, Darkwa 2, Carr 9, Henry 2, Bryant 2, Downey 13, Puckett 1, Entriken 2, Pye 7. Riverside Notre Dame scoring: Johnson 9, Frost 5, Sledge 1, Steele 5, Thomas 8, Escamillo 7, Dial 4, Calhoun 7, Rogers 2. Halftime score -- Ramona 37-20. Three-point goals -- Steele, Calhoun, Moss, Aponte, Downey 2. Total fouls -- Ramona 19, Notre Dame 18. Fouled out -- Thomas (ND), Darkwa.
Rancho Verde 81, Norco 50-- Moreno Valley Rancho Verde (16-1) outscored Norco 21-4 in the second quarter on the way to its seventh consecutive victory. The Mustangs held Norco (6-9) to one field goal in the period. Preston Norman led Rancho Verde with 25 points and 16 rebounds. Rancho Verde scoring: Pinnix 9, Brown 3, Shaw 8, Nash 24, Norman 25, Johnson 2, Howard 2, Morgan 8. Norco scoring was by Norman 14, Branch 5, Vergara 13, Reyes 5, Burghgraef 6, Baaske 3, Guarnett 4. Redlands East Valley 71,Palm Springs 49-- Redlands East Valley used an impressive fourth-quarter run to cruise past Palm Springs in its final non-league game. The Indians pulled to within five points in the fourth quarter before the Wildcats (11-3) pulled away. East Valley made a season-high 10 three-pointers, including four apiece by point guard John Washington (19 points, eight rebounds, eight assists) and Russell DeGood (16 points). Kai Lyles added 11 points and Daniel Arambula chipped in 10 for East Valley. For Palm Springs, Jordi Higueras had 17 points and Paul Barton 11.Palm Springs scoring was by D.Barton 5, Caldwell 8, Higueras 17, Custer 6, Diaz 2, P.Barton 11. East Valley scorers were Arambula 10, Holcombe 4, Del Llano 5, DeGood 16, Washington 19, Werdein 3, Dennis 3, Lyles 11. Halftime score -- East Valley 34-25. Rialto 70, Riverside Poly 43-- Marquez Revels scored 20 points to lead Rialto. David Joiner added 16 and Josh Burnett 15. Marvin Lea led Riverside Poly (8-8) with 15 points and Josh Dunaj had 14. The Knights outscored Poly in every quarter except the third. Rialto scoring was by Revels 20, Burnett 15, Joiner 16, D. Burnett 4, Peterson 5, Davis 5, Swisher 2, Sconers 3. Riverside Poly scorers were Lea 15, Dunaj 14, Quezada 8, Irvin 0, Wilmont 0, Hudson 4, Lopez 2. Halftime score -- Rialto 38-23. Three-point goals -- Dunaj, Lea, Quezada, Rebels 3, Burnett, Peterson. Total fouls -- Rialto 13, Riverside Poly 17. Fouled out -- none.
Serra 72, Montclair Prep 54--Earl Lewis scored 21 points and Ryan Odums had 12, Aerick Sanders 10, and Palmer Brown 10 for Serra in this non-league game played Friday at Montclair Prep. Serra jumped out to a 22-13 first quarter lead and Montclair never really recovered. The two teams played even in the second quarter, both scoring 13 points, but then Serra again turned it one, outscoring Montclair 14-11 in the third, and 23-17 in the fourth. J.J. Prince managed to scored 14 points for Montclair, and Josiah Johnson had 13, but they were the only Mountie players in double figures. Others scoring for Montclair Prep were Konkur 7, Lucas 6, Tatum 3, Anderson 3, Kolgan 2, Will Sheslow 2, Jesse Bronner 2, Kaufman 2. Others scoring for Serra were D.J. Wyatt with 6, Doyle Cole 7, Robinson 4, and Jackson 2.
Village Christian 64, Whitney 46--Senior guard Steve
Lyn scored 11 points, but the Wildcats (3-12) were run down by the visiting Crusaders.
Warren 63, Schurr 38--Senior forward Robert Borg led the Bears (15-1) with 21
points and Branko Kovacic, also a senior forward, added 11 in the win over the visiting
Spartans. Kevin Nojima led Schurr, which was outscored, 39-20, in the second half, with 16
points.
Woodcrest Christian vs. Apple Valley Christian--POSTPONED: Because of high winds on Interstate 15, the California Highway Patrol advised Woodcrest Christian not to make the trip, Woodcrest athletic director Charlie Ricards said. Ricards said the schools will attempt to reschedule.
Yucaipa 80, La Quinta 65-- Skyler Wilson (5'11" So. PG) led La Quinta with 34 points in a losing effort. Yucaipa jumped out to a 22-13 lead and used a dramatic height advantage to control the ball. Steve Pahe scored 18 points and Tom Carroll added 16 as Yucaipa (10-6) dominated from the opening tip-off. Pahe and Carroll each hit two key three-pointers in the first three minutes for Yucaipa. La Quinta scorers were Avon 3, Bert 2, Guiteriez 4, Hundt 2, Tavera 2, Wilson 34, Zamora 4, Franklin 7, Guerrero 3, Cox 4 Yucaipa scorers were Rhoads 7, McCollum 9, Pahe 18, Florence 13, Jones 12, Carroll 16, Martin 2, Olsen 3 Halftime score -- Yucaipa 40-26.
