Weekend High School Hoops: All The
Leagues, All The "M's"--(Jan. 10, 1999)
We managed to collect most of the game results from around SoCal, throughout the Southern Section, played Friday and Saturday (Unless otherwise indicated, these games were played on Friday). In order to make this a bit more manageable, we've split up our reports by league and we'll be filing several reports, exhausting the entire alphabet soup of the 70 or so leagues in SoCal's Southern Section. In this one you'll find results and reports on games in all the Leagues beginning with the letter "M": the Marmonte, Miramonte, Mission, Moore and Mt. Baldy.
Marmonte League
Simi Valley 95, Westlake 61--The Pioneers, ranked No. 1 in the Valley-Ventura area by both papers (the Times and Daily News) and generally regarded as the leading candidate from the region to challenge the traditional D-IAA powers again this year, went on a 22-5 run in the third quarter to break open a close Marmonte League game at Westlake. Westlake had pulled to within 52-45 before Simi Valley (13-2, 2-0 in league play) pulled away behind center Rafael Berumen, who scored 12 of his 23 points in the third quarter. Berumen had 12 rebounds and six blocks. Brett Michel scored 25 points, including four three-point baskets, and had eight of the Pioneers' school-record 34 assists. Branduinn Fullove contributed 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Shaun Michel had 14 assists. Albert Kim scored 19 points for Westlake (7-9, 0-2).
Agoura 64, Royal 61--Garrett Lepisto made a basket from the baseline with 40 seconds left to account for the final margin and Agoura stopped Royal on two late possessions in a Marmonte League game at Agoura. Lepisto and Adam Allegro each finished with 18 points for Agoura (8-8, 2-0). Dustin Cruz had 17 points for Royal (0-2 in league play).
Newbury Park 71, Moorpark 58--Stung by a 30-point loss to Simi Valley in its league opener, Newbury Park bounced back with a balanced offensive effort and strong defensive play to defeat visiting Moorpark 71-58 on Friday night. The Panthers' man-to-man defense yielded 21 points each to Todd Tomlinson and Shawn Corkery, but made the rest of the Moorpark offense disappear in a Marmonte League victory at Newbury Park. Brian Bobik had 15 points, seven assists and five steals for Newbury Park (10-4, 2-1). Anthony Foli and Nick Czernek each scored 12 points for the Panthers. Moorpark is 10-5, 1-1. Anthony Foli came off the bench to add 12 points for Newbury Park. Nick Czernek had 11 and Will Svitek scored 10. Bobik, Brian Polen and Jesse Roche each had eight rebounds, helping Newbury Park to a 44-27 edge on the boards. And Newbury Park's defensive effort helped force 21 Moorpark turnovers -- 13 in the first half -- while the Panthers had just nine giveaways. Newbury Park turned those 13 giveaways into 14 points, while Moorpark scored just one point after a Newbury Park turnover. That difference helped account for much of the 37-21 Newbury Park lead at the half. Guards Shawn Corkery (22 points) and Todd Tomlinson (21) accounted for the bulk of the Moorpark offense. Corkery did most of his damage in the second half, scoring 16 points. Moorpark trailed 63-42 in the fourth quarter before mounting one comeback bid, a nine-point run featuring six points by Tomlinson. That cut the score to 63-51 with 3:06 remaining. But Newbury Park answered with seven of the next nine points to regain control. Josh Perkovich added nine points for Moorpark, and led the Musketters in rebounds with seven.
Miramonte League
Garey 81, Covina Charter Oak 76--Brandon Hogan sank eight 3-pointer and finished with a season-high 28 points and dished out 11 assists to lead the Vikings (8-8) to a victory over the Chargers (8-11) in the league opener for both teams. Charter Oak cut a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to four, but could get no closer. Brian Ponder had 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Mission League
Harvard-Westlake 89, Alemany 80-- This was a wild game, and the Mission League, which prior to yesterday looked like a two-team race is once again wide open. Harvard-Westlake, which this week lost to Crespi, beat Alemany in a rough and raucuos three point game. At the same time this contest was going on, Notre Dame, which looked like it would struggle for most of the season, picked up it's first win in league, beating Loyola. And finally, the big upset of the night was Crespi, the surprise team of the league, beating Chaminade at home.
This one got off to a rocky start: Harvard-Westlake was assessed a technical even before the game started for dunking in warmups after being warned to stop. And then, about two minutes into the game, Alemany's Reggie Kinlaw was ejected for throwing a hard elbow at Eric Geffner's head. In the first quarter, the score was 14-14, then Alemany outscored H-W 9-1 to finish the first quarter ahead 23-15, with 13 of Alemany's first quarter points on Montgomery baskets; despite Montgomery's 7 second quater points, Geffner tied the game at 40-40 by converting a three point play, by making a shot nearly off the top of the backboard, but it went in and he drew the foul In the second half, H-W scored the first 8 points before Casey Clausen made a three point play and Todd Kurihawa then made a three pointer to put HW ahead 51-43. HW then managed to jump out to 61-47 lead. Clausen had 7 third quarter points, and at the end of the quarter, it was 65-53. In the fourth, HW was up 69-57 when Alemany scored 8 straight points, three coming on steals off a full court pressure D to bring the score to 69-65, but HW maintained composure and continued to pull ahead, extending the lead to 74-69 when Dan Kinzer, who played reasonably well, managed to foul out. Lakey then hit a jumper to make score 76-70 following a free throw by Clausen. Holmes then hit two free throws to make it 78-70. After Bryson Atkins missed the front end of a one-and-one, and and Alex Minn scored by hitting a jumper off a Lakey assist, it was pretty much over.
Lakey had 26, including one three pointer, and he had 4
steals and 5 assists. Alex Minn finished with 12 points, Eric Geffner finished with 9
points and 3 steals, Alex Holmes had 7 rebounds and 4 points, Charles Gillig had
8 rebounds, 6 points and 4 assists, Dan Kinzer had Kinzer 5 rebounds, 6
points, 3 assists, and Craig Weinstein had 3 (a 3 pointer). Kalechi Ogbunamuri had 2,
Chris Berkett had 2, Todd Kurihawa had 19 points. Scorers for Alemany
were Renny Maynard with 21 points, 14 in second half including 2 threes; Devin Montgomery
had 28 point, 20 in first half (5-2's, and 10 freethrows) Casey Clausen had 8 points, all
in second half, and 7 in the third, Nelson had 8 points, Bryson Atkins 10, Byron
Joseph 2, and Goodman 3. Score by quarters: HW 15, 25, 20, 24; Alemany 23, 17, 13,
27. Harvard Westlake is now 9-8 overall and 2-1 in league. Alemany is 8-5 and
1-1 in league.
Crespi beat Chaminade 42-38
Notre Dame 54, Loyola 51--The Knights rallied from a 10-point deficit with three minutes to play in regulation, then outscored Loyola, 7-4, in overtime in a Mission League game at Notre Dame. Sophomore Cody Pearson, who led Notre Dame (7-9, 1-1) with 25 points and 10 rebounds, made two three-point baskets to trigger the run. Chris Williams made two free throws with 20 seconds left to tie the score, 47-47. In overtime, Dante Ward made three free throws as Notre Dame scored the first four points.
Crespi 42, Chaminade 38-- The unassuming guard was
the last guy you'd expect to stick the dagger in the heart of Chaminade High. But it's
Andrew Moore's quiet persona, the one that fits so well with the Crespi boys' basketball
team, that makes him so dangerous. The minute you forget Moore's around, he goes off on
you. The Eagles found that out on Friday when the sophomore shooting guard scored 12
fourth-quarter points -- on four consecutive 3-pointers -- to lead Crespi to a 42-38 upset
win in a Mission League game at Chaminade. It was first league loss for the Eagles (10-3,
0-1) since losing to Harvard-Westlake two years ago. For the Celts, it was one of the
biggest wins in school history, coming on the heels of an overtime victory against
Harvard-Westlake on Wednesday. Crespi (10-3, 2-0) is now a major player in the league
championship race. Moore came into the quarter with just three points. He started his run
with a 3-point shot to cut the Eagles' lead to 33-30, then tied it at 33-33 less than a
minute later with another 3-pointer. His third gave Crespi the lead at 36-35, then he put
the Celts ahead to stay 39-36 with his final 3-pointer with just over two minutes
remaining. Chaminade coach Jeff Young paid respect to Moore's hot shooting but felt the
Eagles hurt their cause with too many missed layups. Scott Borchart had one roll out with
1:08 left, and Cayce Cook couldn't convert with 10 seconds left.
And our favorite quote in the papers about this game, the unkindest of cuts came from
Chaminade Coach Jeff Young who said: "Nothing against Crespi at all, but this
was more us losing the game than them winning it. Don't get me wrong, Andrew Moore had a
great quarter, and that was what put them in a position to win. But we missed some shots
we usually make and we also got beat on some rebounds that we should have had."
Ouch.
Moore League
Compton 56, Wilson 43-- Tito Maddox (6'-4" Sr. PG) scored 21 points as the Tarbabes (9-3, 1-0) opened up a close game in the third quarter to defeat the Bruins (4-13, 0-1) at Wilson High. Ellis Myles (6'-6" Jr. F) of Compton added 13 points while Norman Campbell, a senior guard, led the Bruins with 10 points.
Mt. Baldy League
Chaffey 62, Alta Loma 61-- In a game that went down to the wire, Chaffey pulled out a league victory, defeating Alta Loma 62-61 in a Mt. Baldy League nail-biter. Down 58-55 late in the game, John Turner hit a huge 3-pointer and the Tigers never looked back. Turner finished with 24 points to lead all scorers and Marshall Turner added 17. Adam Parada scored 16 points in the loss for the Braves. Chaffey (6-9, 1-0) plays Ontario at home Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Ontario 77, Etiwanda 56--Mike Niles scored 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Ontario to its first league win. Jason Burrell was the next high scorer for the Jaguars with 18 points. Reco Wright scored 19 points for the Eagles in the loss. Ontario (12-3, 1-0) plays its next league game at Chaffey Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
Montclair 74, Rancho Cucamonga--Ronald Williams scored 19 points and Garreth Read added 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots as Montclair built a 20-point halftime lead and withstood a third-quarter rally to upset Rancho Cucamonga in the Mt. Baldy League opener for both teams. Rancho Cucamonga, ranked No. 10 in the Inland Valley, dropped to 11-6 overall. Montclair improved to 10-4. Montclair made 15 of 20 free throws in the fourth quarter. The Cougars were led by Ken Bond's 17 points.
