Weekend High School Hoops: All The
Leagues, F-L--(Jan. 10, 1999)

We managed to collect most of the game results from around SoCal, throughout the Southern Section,  played Friday and Saturday (Unless otherwise indicated, these games were played on Friday). In order to make this a bit more manageable, we've split up our reports by league and we'll be filing several reports, exhausting the entire alphabet soup of the 70 or so leagues in SoCal's Southern Section.   In this one you'll find results and reports on games in the Foothill,   Freeway,  Garden Grove, Golden, Golden West, Liberty and Los Padres Leagues.

Foothill League

Burroughs 78, Saugus 69--Burroughs outscored visiting Saugus, 12-3, in the second overtime of a Foothill League opener that featured buzzer-beating three-point baskets by both teams.  Chad Frenzel of Burroughs (9-7) connected from long distance at the regulation buzzer to tie the score, 60-60. Saugus' Doug Summerhays made a three-pointer at the close of the first overtime to make the score 66-66.  Kevin Krose, who led Burroughs with 22 points, scored nine in the overtimes, including five in the second.

Valencia 67, Hart 46--Valencia used its speed to the maximum as the Vikings pounded Hart, 67-46, in the Foothill League opener for both teams before a raucous standing-room-only crowd at Hart High. Valencia, which came in having lost of five of its last six games, improved to 8-9, while Hart dropped to 11-6.   Valencia High finally lifted a huge weight from its back Friday nightas the Vikings, a week after the death of their team manager, posted their first-ever victory over rival Hart, 67-46, in a Foothill League opener at Hart.  Sophomore Will Broadous scored 19 points and Royce Minor added 18 for Valencia (8-9), which wore black wrist bands in honor of Sean Williams, who died in a Val Verde house fire. Williams' funeral was yesterday (Saturday).  Eskias McDaniel scored 11 points for Valencia.  Tamir Barkan had 18 points for Hart (11-6), which has won three consecutive Foothill championships and seven of the last eight.  McDaniels had 13 points and Albert Ingram chipped in with six points as the Vikings built a commanding 37-18 halftime lead.   The Indians, who never led in the game, received a team-high 18 points from Tamir Barkan and seven from Liam Waters, who had 30 in Tuesday's win over Palmdale.   Valencia received 3-point baskets from Broadous and McDaniels to build a 24-13 lead with about six minutes left in the first half.   Hart, which made just five of18 free throws, narrowed the margin to 41-31 on a 3-point shot by Waters 1:39 left in the third quarter.  A three-point play from Manuel White gave the Vikings a 50-37 lead with 6:09 remaining in the game.

Canyon (Canyon Country) 43, Burbank 37-- Eric Rohwer (6'-9" Sr. PF/C) was ejected on Tuesday from Burbank's final non-league game, and was not able to play under CIF rules in the league opening game on Friday night against Canyon. Canyon shot 48.6 percent from the floor and came up with big defensive plays down the stretch to defeat Rohwer-less Burbank, 43-37.  The Cowboys (8-8) used a balanced shooting attack from Anthony Falasca and Jason French, combining it with solid inside play from Jacyn Ezell and Jimmy Jennings to get just enough done to beat the Bulldogs, who stayed in the game right until the final minutes.  In the end, it was a key follow-up basket by Bryson Everett with 1:27 left to give Canyon a 41-37 lead and two subsequent defensive stops by the Cowboys that earned the win.  It certainly wasn't at the free-throw line, where Canyon made only 5-of-16.  Burbank took a 19-18 halftime lead after trailing most of the first quarter. The Bulldogs made an 8-2 run to open the second quarter leaving the Cowboys to play catch-up in the final three minutes of the half.   They pulled within one after French sunk a 3-pointer at the buzzer. In the third the Cowboys opened up the second half with a 8-2 run. In the remainder of the quarter, Falasca dropped in two of the three 3-pointers he had in the game to give Canyon a 31-26 margin going into the fourth quarter.  Then Canyon's defense took over in the final eight minutes. Everett led Canyon with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Falasca added 11 points. French had nine points and Jennings had nine rebounds, eight defensive.   Burbank was held to only four scorers. Frank Reed, who seemed to swarm all over the court, led Burbank with 17. Jack Holwahian added 14.

But they also never led by more than nine points.  Atascadero won with some good defense and by shooting 9-for-13 from the three-point line. Paso Robles is 7-7 overall.  Though the Bearcats made more shots than Atascadero, they had trouble with the three-pointer ( 2-for-16 ) and with their free throw shooting.  Atascadero trailed only at the start of the third quarter, when Paso Robles sophomore J.R. Webb scored four straight points to put the Bearcats ahead 30-27.   Lees followed with seven unanswered points.  The Greyhounds' win avenged a 64-58 tournament loss to the Bearcats on Dec. 19.   Chris Donovan had 17 points for Atascadero, while Lees had a career-high 15 points and seven rebounds, and Jonathan Bentley had 13 points.   Bentley scored all of his points in the final 9:32 of the game.  Paso Robles' Brett Larson had 17 points.  The Bearcats were held well below their 62.5-point average.  On Wednesday, Atascadero hosts Santa Ynez, while Paso Robles hosts Cabrillo.
