Weekend CIF Southern Section
& City Section Results--(Jan. 25, 1999)
We can't promise that we've got every single game, but we do have a substantial amount of them from Friday and the few which were played Saturday around SoCal. We're also compiling league standings since the CIF hasn't been publishing them lately. There were some big performances, and it was a big weekend for the Pac-10 bound players: Casey Jacobsen scored 38 points Friday; Gilbert Arenas scored 47 also on Friday night. Julius Barnes scored 27. There were some other big scorers, including Mike Yildiz of Bell-Jeff (formerly of Grant with Arenas last year) who scored 33, but if we see one more SCIBCA Poll which lists Bell-Jeff (1-5 in league, 8-12 overall) among the D-VAA "Top 10" we're going to throw up. C'mon guys, there are better teams than this in D-V. Surely you can find at least 10 teams with winning records from the more than 70 teams in the division. Can't you?
Oh, did we mention Jason Kapono scored 50 points. So did some guy named Mitchell from Pioneer Baptist. Guess which one is going to sign with a D-I team and which one you've never heard of before. Other big time scoring was done by Leitch of El Segundo with 39, Baily from Pilgrim with 40, Williams from Corona Centennial with 36, Owen from Huntington Park with 34, James Wright of Manual who scored 33 in the game against Venice, another guy named Williams from Westview who scored 33 as did Todd Tomlinson of Moorpark, a junior who will be a big time prospect next year; Raphael Berumen also scored 34 points, but then he's already a big deal. There were a bunch of other guys who scored more than 30 on Friday, including Sanches of Sierra Vista, Harwell from South Bay Lutheran, Sattiewhite from Channel Islands, Connor from Leuzinger all with 32, Clay Robbins of Hollywood with 31; Florence from Yucaipa, Drumm from Baldwin Hills, Hinojosa from Don Lugo each had 31 as well, and finally Damian O'Connor of Hamilton, Ohannesian of Mesrobian and LaBomme from West Covina all had 30 points.
And this weekend, most of the favorites won. Except for Santa Clara, which lost to Nordhoff. And Valencia, which beat Canyon Country Canyon. Oh, and don't forget Canyon of Anaheim beating Villa Park. And we're not sure who was supposed to win, but Sonora and Troy played to a wild, triple overtime finish, only the second one we've seen reported this season (the other one was the Buckley v. Windward game one week ago).
Anyway, we know this isn't complete for the entire Southern Section, as we've still got some games to add, but decided to just post this before it got stale. There are only a handful of games being played tonight (Monday) so we'll have ample time to update later in the evening. For now, here's the rest of what we were able to piece together:
Academy League
Cap. Valley Christain 72, Fairmont 25-- Capo Valley had four players in double figures, led by McCheseni with 16, Allen 13, Tiller 10 and Graves 11, as Cap Valley Christian held Fairmont to single digit scoring in every quarter. Inglewood 88, North Torrance 51-- Inglewood improved to 20-3 overall and 7-1 in league behind center Noel Felix, who scored 12 points in the first quarter en route to a game-high 18. The 6-foot-8 senior simply jumped over North's smaller defenders. Sentinel guards Sandy Fletcher and Lenny Brown, added 14 and 10 respectively. Point guard Jermel Brooks led the Saxons with nine points and center Damian Phillips added eight. Defensive pressure helped create an uptempo style, which favored Inglewood. The Sentinels got off to a quick start and held a 26-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Sentinels led 48-22 at halftime and 67-28 in the third quarter. With Inglewood's starters on the bench, North kept pace in the final quarter, earning a 23-21 advantage. When North tried to slow the pace down, Inglewood simply spotted up behind the 3-point stripe.

Camino Real League
St. Anthony 69, St. Monica 60-- St. Anthony forced 15 turnovers after the break to make up an eight-point deficit on its way to a 69-60 Camino Real League victory over visiting St. Monica Friday night. The Saints defensive performance in the second half had a positive effect on its offense, as the team more than doubled its scoring output from the opening half, which ended with the Mariners leading, 30-22. While its offense and defense might have sagged at times during the game, junior swingman Pearson Smith was a consistent force for St. Anthony. The 5-foot-11 Smith, whose 10 points in the first half helped keep the Saints in the game, finished with 21 points, 14 rebounds and five steals despite playing against a much taller frontline. Smith, junior point guard A.J. Diggs (23 points) and junior forward Jared Lloyd (20 points) combined to score 24 points in the third period as the Saints surged ahead, 47-46. The trio scored all the points during a 13-4 run to start the final period as St. Anthony (16-5, 3-1) took a comfortable 61-50 lead with just under three minutes left. Sophomore Jamayne Potts scored five of his game-high 24 points during a quick 10-3 burst that helped St. Monica (10-10, 2-1) close to within, 64-60, with 1:13 left. However, the Saints forced three turnovers down the stretch to end the threat.
Verbum Dei 74, Bosco Tech 24--The Eagles (14-7, 3-0) used 17 points from Jamaal Dean to upend the Tigers at Verbum Dei High. Verbum Dei's leading scorer on the season, Marlon Parmer (25 ppg), was held to just nine points and five assists.
Century League
Canyon 57, Villa Park 50--Roger Hogan (5'-11" Jr. SG) shocked the Spartans with a 20-point effort that led to a 57-50 Century League boys' basketball victory. Center Ryan Romberg had 20 points and 13 rebounds for Canyon (13-6, 5-0), but it was the grit of several unsung Comanche guards that shot down host Villa Park (14-8, 4-1) in front of a standing-room-only crowd. The Spartans were the better team in the first quarter, in which they had an 18-8 advantage. Canyon steadily chipped away at Villa Park's lead, and trailed 29-27 when most of the gym lights went out with 1:19 left to end the first half. The referees decided to start halftime at that point to allow the lights to be re-illuminated, and they added an additional minute to the third quarter to make it a nine-minute quarter. The Comanches took the lead for good midway through the fourth quarter when Hogan's three-pointer put his team ahead, 46-43. Hogan, who was 6 for 11 from the field, scored seven points in the final quarter. Hammad, who came into the game averaging more than 20 points, made only 3 of 11 shots, but all three were crucial. He scored the final basket of the first half to cut the Comanches' deficit to two points; he made a layup to give Canyon a three-point lead in the third quarter; and his 16-foot jumper with just over a minute remaining gave Canyon a six-point cushion. Canyon took its first lead, 32-31, on a layup by Romberg off an assist from Yu 1 minute 20 seconds into the third quarter. The lead changed hands several times until Hogan's 10-foot baseline shot with 6:15 left in the game gave Canyon the lead for good, 44-43. Hogan extended the lead to 46-43 a minute later with a 12-footer. Hammad made it 48-43 with two free throws, but Villa Park's Andy Olsen responded with a basket. Back came Hogan. He fed Romberg for a turnaround jumper with 4:20 to play, then made two free throws 50 seconds later for a 52-45 lead. Villa Park, which got 11 points from forward Adam Keith, made only 18 of 51 field-goal attempts.
El Modena 61, Santa Ana Valley 53--Stephan Pervich
had 22 points to lead El Modena (6-15, 1-4). Jimmy Lopez and Alex
Landa each had three three-pointers for Santa Ana Valley.

Moharram, in fact, had all of the Royals' points - five - until Casias hit a 3-pointer with 3:50 left in the second period. Following a three-point play by Christ, Casias hit a trey and followed with a free throw to cut Santa Barbara's lead to 21-14. It was the closest San Marcos would get. Freeman scored on a pass from Christ and added a rebound basket after Moharram hit a free throw. Williams scored near the end of the half and Christ, Freeman and Williams all scored to open the third period. Santa Barbara finished 20-for-48 shooting on the night while San Marcos was a dismal 13-54 (24 percent). The Dons are holding teams to roughly 30 percent shooting from the field in league play. On Wednesday Santa Barbara travels to Dos Pueblos in a battle of the league's two unbeaten teams. Dos Pueblos, 16-4, has a high octane offense led by flashy guard ShanTay Legans.
Ventura 69, Buena 49-- Ventura (11-9, 1-2) blew open a 27-27 first-half game, as senior guard Jeff Staniland scored 25 points and senior forward Gary Peterson added 17, including five 3-pointers. Staniland scored 16 of his points in the second half and led a 16-2 run from the end of the third quarter through the start of the fourth quarter that gave Ventura a 53-35 lead. Buena (8-12, 0-4) was led by senior center Peter Brown's 15 points and sophomore guard Ryan Cobos' 11. Peterson hit four consecutive 3-point shots in the first quarter to give Ventura a 17-13 lead. He made 5 of 8 from long range. Staniland and Peterson are among the Ventura seniors who are 3-0 against Buena during the last two seasons. Cobos nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game, 19-19, with 5:45 left in the second quarter. Following a basket each by Antwaine Richards and Staniland for Ventura, Brown made a basket underneath and then Buena grabbed its first lead of the game, 24-23, on a 3-pointer by Cobos with 3:44 left in the half. Staniland made his only 3-point basket of the game to regain the lead, 26-24, but Buena's Josh Jones made a free throw and a two-point basket to give Buena a 27-26 lead with 1:24 left. Moments later, Buena senior forward Danny Thompson picked up his third foul. Kyle Bauerlein made a free throw for Ventura to the game at the half. When Thompson picked up his fourth foul 48 seconds into the third quarter, Buena was in trouble. With Thompson on the bench, Buena did not have its usual inside presence. Ventura guards Jeff Pabst and Tyler Ebell made two 3-point baskets and finished with eight and seven points, respectively. Mike Derse led Ventura in rebounds with five and Staniland had four assists to lead the Cougars.

charity stripe. Kurt DeMaio, playing with a twisted ankle, led Saugus with 15
points and six rebounds. Jerome Edwards chipped in with 14 points and four rebounds. Hart
received 13 points apiece from David Briggs and Liam Waters. Briggs made a team-high three
3-point shots. The Centurions, fresh off a 71-69 victory over Valencia Tuesday
night, built 45-35 lead entering the fourth quarter and appeared to have the momentum.
However, the defending-league-champion Indians scored on six consecutive possessions and
took a 50-47 lead on a 3-point basket by Briggs with 2:28 left. The basket forced
Saugus coach Jeff Hallman to call a 20-second timeout. Saugus, which was outscored
17-8 in the final quarter, remained consistent at the line making all six free throws in
the final 1:05. The Indians, coming off a 37-28 loss to Burbank Tuesday night, made
a valiant comeback despite being plagued by foul trouble. Tamir Barkan fouled out in the
closing moments and center Kelly Weldon and Payam Parvinchiha each had four fouls in the
fourth quarter. Hart coach Dave Montgomery said the free throws were the telling
statistic.
Valencia 68, Canyon (Canyon Country) 65--Valencia improved to 11-10 overall and 4-1
in league and took sole possession of first place with the win on Friday night.
Canyon is now 10-10 overall and 3-2 in league, and still very much in the league
race. But Valencia also has what could be the league's best player, Eskias
McDaniels. McDaniels, the league's leading scorer at 21.4 points per game, and on Friday
he scored 27. He netted five 3-pointers, getting three critical threes in a 4:57 span
straddling the third and fourth quarters, launching the ball over Canyon's Everett Bryson.
All shot from the top of the key, McDaniels' 3-pointers ensured the lead that the
Vikings took early in the third quarter after rallying back from a 12-point first-quarter
deficit. Those baskets also came in handy for late in the game, when Canyon reduced
an eight-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to only one with 1:25 left.
Jimmy Jennings, Jason French and Bryson made clutch points in the final minutes,
capitalizing on two defensive rebounds as Valencia's shooting went dry in the final
moments. But Canyon was not shooting well either, and with under two minutes, Canyon took
four shots from under the basket two from Bryson and two from Jacyn Ezell, and they
all missed. Canyon got the ball back after another Valencia miss and Bryson scored to cut
Valencia's advantage to 66-65. The Cowboys again got the ball back after Valencia's
Manuel White couldn't get the handle on a Albert Ingram pass. But Anthony Falasca missed
an 8-foot jumper that would have put the Cowboys ahead, leaving Valencia's Will Broadous
to score with 18 seconds left to seal it. McDaniels added 12 rebounds to his
growing portfolio, while teammates Royce Minor and Broadous scored 13 apiece. White had
nine points and 10 rebounds. Bryson led Canyon with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Jennings had 14 points and nine rebounds, while Falasca had 14 points and five assists.
Freeway League
Sonora 61, Troy 55 (3OT)--Few victories have taken
longer for Sonora than the three overtimes it took Friday to beat the visiting Warriors,
61-55, before a standing-room only crowd. Reserve forward Robert Abreu, playing
because starter Marqui Worthy had fouled out, finally decided the contest, scoring the
first seven points in the third overtime on three baskets and a free throw. They were the
only points in the game for Abreu, who also had three rebounds and a key steal in the
final overtime. T.J. Hardeman, Troy's coach, was still steamed at an
intentional foul called on guard Jerry Inzunza with 1.6 seconds to play in regulation and
Troy ahead, 41-40. Sonora guard Bim Okinrimboye made one of the two free throws, forcing
the overtime.Troy apeared to have the game won in regulation. The Warriors were clinging
to a 41-40 lead with six seconds left when Theron Chaney got a steal and was tied up. Troy
got the ball on alternate possession and got it to guard Jerry Inzunza, the team's leading
scorer. Inzunza missed the free throw with 4.6 seconds left and Sonora desperately went
the other way. Instead of a last-second shot, however, officials called Alex Raco
for an intentional foul, claiming he grabbed Okinrimbove as the Raider guard was running
down the sideline. Okinrimbove missed the first free throw but made the second to
force the overtime. Normally we'd hesitate to reprint what a coach says in haste, but
here's what Hardeman told the Orange County Edition of the LA Times: "The officiating
screwed us tonight and you can quote me," Hardeman said. "Change that. Say Coach
Hardeman thought the officiating was wonderful." Sonora improved to 17-5, 5-0,
after beating its other Freeway pursuer Buena Park at home early in the week. The
Raiders are the league's only unbeaten team and have a two-game lead over Troy (12-8,
3-2), who shared last year's league title with them. Sonora guard Curtis Levine led all
scorers with 20 points. Robert Abreu opened the third overtime with a bucket inside
Quinn Hawking and Okinrimbove followed with buckets of their own. Okinrimbove hit two free
throws for a 57-49 advantage with 55 seconds left that put the game away. Curtis
Levine led Sonora with 20 points while Hawking had 17 points. Inzunza led Troy with 18
points while Chaney had 12 points and 16 rebounds.
Buena Park 51, Sunny Hills 48--Buena Park's DeAndre Gipson made two free throws
with 11 seconds remaining, then Sunny Hills missed a three-pointer at the buzzer to give
the host Coyotes (16-5, 4-1) the victory. Jaamal Allen scored 16 points for Buena Park.
La Habra 71, Fullerton 35--Nathan Allard scored 13 points and Adam Provence had 12 for La Habra (9-9, 2-3). Fullerton is 5-14, 1-4.
Frontier League
Santa Paula 73, Malibu 48--Mike Kolbeck pumped in 24 points to lead Santa Paula (12-9, 3-1). Jacob Macias tossed in 12 points and Danny Guzman had eight assists.
Nordhoff 69, Santa Clara 62-- Santa Clara actually
dominated early, bolting to a 11-4 lead. But Nordhoff rallied, closing out the
second quarter with a 15-2 run, including the final 11 points unanswered for a 34-25
halftime lead. Flores, of course, was the big man with nine points in the spree -- seven
in a row on two drives and a 3-pointer. Popp had the other six points. Andy Flores
(6'-2" Sr. F) grabbed a key defensive rebound near the end of the game, after making
an 11-0 run to take command 56-44 with less than four minutes to play. Nordhoff
(16-2) not only grabbed the win, it grabbed first place in the Frontier League at 4-0
while Santa Clara (17-3) fell to 2-2. Flores led the way with 24 points and 13
rebounds as well as three steals and two blocked shots. Flores' teammate Etienne
Emanuel, added 15 points and 11 assists. Jeff May, Jason Popp and Dustin Baier also scored
well: With a 27 combined points, May (13), Popp (8) and Baier (6) were the difference.
Santa Clara's entire team -- except for the two stars, Nick Jones and B.J. Ward --
combined for 19 points among five scorers. Jones finished with a game-high 28 points
before fouling out and Ward had 15 before also fouling out late.
Popp contributed more than just scoring. He set the tone for the game in the opening
seconds by blocking Terrance Dotsy's first two shots. Popp added a third rejection, and
Emanuel, May and Flores also joined the block party later on. Offensively for
Nordhoff, if there was one shot that was bigger than the rest, it also came from an
unexpected place: a 3-pointer by May after Santa Clara, which at one time trailed by 11
points in the third quarter, had pulled to within 45-44 with 5:11 left in the game. Only
the second 3-pointer of the game for Nordhoff, the shot started the Rangers on their 11-0
take-control-of-the-game scoring spree.

Royal, which trailed by 10 points at halftime and by eight points after three periods, heated up in the fourth quarter and grabbed leads of 65-59 and 67-65. The latter came with eight seconds remaining. But Corkery was fouled with four seconds remaining, and hit both free throws to send the game into overtime. Tied, 76-76, after the first overtime, Moorpark used back-to-back 3-pointers by Brian Hunter and Tomlinson to take command. Tomlinson, who tallied 13 points in the opening period, had six 3-pointers.

seconds left, but the Knights had no timeouts remaining in the Mission League game.

seemed headed to an upset after opening a 45-40 advantage. Crespi (14-4, 4-1) scored
only two points in the fourth quarter until Tim McDonough made a three-point basket with
44 seconds left in regulation, pulling the Celts to within 45-43. After a traveling

Chaminade 64, Alemany 57-- We didn't go to this game
(instead we were at the Harvard-Westlake vs. Loyola game), but here's what the Times had
to say: " Alemany fans were left questioning the 33 foul calls against the
Indians and wishing their team could replay the final two minutes. In a see-saw
second half, J.J. Todd's dunk with 1:20 remaining put Chaminade ahead for good and the
Eagles pulled away with free throws to win it, 64-57, in front of a
standing-room-only crowd at L.A. Baptist High. Todd, a 6-foot-11 starter who played only
about nine minutes, returned to the game with three minutes remaining and provided the
final surge for the Eagles (16-3, 5-1 in league play), who claimed their first lead early
in the third quarter. Todd's dunk--only the second of the senior's career--on Clarence
Mitchell's assist gave Chaminade a 58-57 lead, the 11th and final lead change of the
second half. Todd grabbed the rebound of an Alemany miss on the ensuing possession,
was fouled and made one of two free throws for a 59-57 advantage. He rebounded another
Alemany miss and started a fast break culminating in a dunk by Scott Borchart for a 61-57
lead with 32 seconds left. Borchart finished with 24 points. Todd was pulled
from the game early when Alemany's trapping full-court press forced six turnovers and
Young opted for better ballhandlers.
Alemany (11-6, 4-2) took its biggest leads in the first quarter, 20-10 and 22-12, before
Chaminade caught up at halftime, 32-32, on a three-point basket by Mitchell. "

Santa Ana Calvary Chapel 53, Cerritos Valley Christian 51-- Well, we didn't see this game, but there were at least two versions of it that we saw in the local papers. The Long Beach Press-Telegram had the following: "Brett Young hit a 15-footer with :05 seconds left to give the Eagles (14-5, 4-2) the win over the host Crusaders (14-5, 3-3). Valley Christian, which had trailed by seven with just over a minute remaining, tied the game at 51-51 on a Jason Rudell layup. After Young's jumper, Erick Streelman (15 points, 12 boards) missed a running jumper from 12 feet at the buzzer for the Crusaders." And the Los Angeles Times' Orange County Edition had this to say: Brett Young made two free throws with 11 seconds left to provide the winning margin for visiting Calvary Chapel (11-8, 4-2). Young led the Eagles with 14 points." Oh well, at least we know that Calvary Chapel won.

Wink, who is now playing for Northwestern. Brea Olinda (18-2, 4-0), also got

Rebels (13-7, 3-1) past the Sentinels (10-10, 2-2). Magnolia's Asi Faoa led all scorers
with 31 points." Notice the difference? We don't know which is right, but we do
know Savanna won.

Muir's senior point guard, Jeff Washington was the catalyst, and he needed to be since the normally high-scoring Darrelle Rowe was held to just three ponts. Washington scored a team high 14 points, as did Nate Johnson. Washington also had 13 assists and only two turnovers in the game. John Parker scored 12 points and had nine rebounds while Johnson had 8 boards. Basically, Muir's defense stopped any offensive effort that Pasadena might have mustered. Carpinteria 50, Bishop Diego 47-- The second half provided most of the fireworks. With the game tied at 23 coming out of the locker room, it was anybody's contest. Bishop Diego took an early third quarter lead with a Jason Gibbs bucket, but John Barbieri was there to answer. Barbieri, who had 27 points, hit a 3-pointer while being fouled by Josh Steward and subsequently hit the free throw, pulling off a rare four point play. The game then turned into a battle between Jamie Sanchez and Warrior forward Tyler Matson. Sanchez, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds, had six points in the quarter, including a brilliant 3-pointer off an inbounds pass. Matson finally proved there was more to the Carpinteria team than Barbieri, however, as he hit three short jumpers. The game was tied at 37-37 going into the final two seconds of the quarter, when Barbieri drove down the baseline and hit a layup at the buzzer. Gibbs (14 points and 18 rebounds) seemed to give the Cardinals some momentum at the beginning of the final period. He scored on an alley-oop pass from Sanchez, and thus tied up the game for the seventh time. Bishop Diego then looked to be pulling away, as it received buckets from Aaron Martinez and Sanchez to put their lead at 43-39. The teams traded baskets for the next two minutes until Scott Lopez converted on a Cardinals turnover with a bank shot to tie the game at 45. Carpinteria coach Jeff Freitas called a timeout and it seemed to pump up his squad. After the timeout, Steward took the ball down the court, but then coughed it up right into the hands of Ben Scott. Scott went the distance of the court for a layup, giving Carpinteria the lead for good at 47-45. Matson extended the lead to four points with 1:25 to play with another layup. Gibbs made it interesting by cutting the lead to 49-47 but, fittingly, Barbieri made one of two free throws on the ensuing possession to close out the game. Barbieri continually kept the Warriors close with critical shots, most stopping Cardinals runs. His best quarter came in the second when he tallied nine points behind three key layups and an NBA-length 3-pointer that tied up the game going into the half.

When swingman William Warren connected on a 3-pointer, Ganesha (5-14, 2-5) pulled within 42-38 with 4:40 remaining in the third quarter. A 15-0 run followed. Smith didn't score a second-half point until 3:21 remained, but then dropped in a six-footer, two layups and a follow as the Saints posted a 9-3 rebounding advantage in the quarter. San Dimas built a 41-28 halftime lead on 15 points by Smith and 11 by forward D.J. Hackett, who finished with 13. The Saints connected on 17-of-29 field goal attempts in the first half (59 percent) and ended 32-of-58 (55 percent). Guard Matt Grundy added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Saints. Warren led the Giants with 14, but was shut out in the fourth quarter.

the game, because the next highest scorer for PB only had 12. Sheesh.
Somebody find out about this guy and let us know what's up.
