Weekend High School Hoops: All The
Leagues, A-E--(Jan. 10, 1999)
We managed to collect most of the game results from around SoCal, throughout the Southern Section, played Friday and Saturday (Unless otherwise indicated, these games were played on Friday). In order to make this a bit more manageable, we've split up our reports by league and we'll be filing several reports, exhausting the entire alphabet soup of the 70 or so leagues in SoCal's Southern Section. In this one you'll find the Academy League, Baseline League, Bay League, Camino Real League, City Section Non-Conference and Southeastern Conference, Century, Channel, and Empire Leagues. More to follow.

Upland 48, Claremont 33-- Upland managed the win
Friday night in a Baseline league opener at Claremont. Upland (13-1), which won the
Upland, Rancho Cucamonga and Byron Johnson tournaments in preparation for league play,
held Claremont to 33-percent field goal shooting while the Wolfpack committed 10
second-half turnovers. Upland senior forward Desmond Penigar, one of four Upland players
who stand 6-foot-5 or taller, scored a game-high 18 points with five rebounds. Claremont
(13-4) was led by forward Anthony Douglas' 10 points. The Wolfpack trailed by just 23-17
at
halftime, but they managed just six third-quarter shots against fierce Upland defenders
who stretched their hands-in-the-face pressure beyond the 3-point line. Only one of the
six shots was good and Claremont was also done in by six turnovers, falling behind 38-21
after the third. The Wolfpack, who wound up 12-of-36 from the floor, never made it closer

Redondo Union 72, Morningside 53--Redondo's boys basketball team got its usual solid games from Walter White and Andrew Zahn, but it was the play of guards Dijon Thompson and Keith Ellison that allowed the Sea Hawks to break away from Morningside in a 72-53 Bay League win Friday night at Morningside. White posted 23 points, 14 rebounds and four steals and Andrew Zahn collected 17 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, but it was the ball-handling of Thompson and Ellison that pushed Redondo over the top. Both Thompson and Ellison broke down the swarming defensive pressure of the Monarchs with their ball-handling and passing. Thompson finished with 14 points and three assists, and Ellison contributed five points and five assists for Redondo (9-4, 2-0). Dwayne Trotter paced Morningside with 16 points. The Fighting Irish cut the lead to three at halftime, but Cypress used a 13-8 third quarter to put the game away.
Loara 67, Katella 59--Last season Loara and Katella
split their two league meetings with each team winning at home. But on Friday night the
Saxons took the early advantage by beating the Knights, 67-57, at Katella in the Empire
League opener for both teams. Herbert Gracia scored 28 points and the Saxons defense
pressured Katella all night long, forcing ballhandlers into ill-advised passes and
traveling violations. Both teams played sloppy early and combined for only 22 points in
the first quarter, which Loara led, 13-9. Katella (12-5, 0-1) answered in the second
period behind the three-point shooting of guard Matt Tisthammer, who hit a pair from
behind the arc as Katella built a 32-30 halftime lead. The Knights led 43-41 after three
periods. That's
when Gracia took over. He found holes in the Knights defense and was able to both
distribute the ball to Ben and Wes Wardrop inside or create scoring situations for
himself, which led either to baskets or free throws. Wes Wardrop finished with 17 points
for Loara (15-2, 1-0) while Ben Wardrop added 15 points and six rebounds. Loara
trailed, 43-41 going into the fourth quarter, but Gracia scored 13 of his 30 points in the
fourth as Loara outscored the Knights, 26-16. Trevor Holton scored five points and
had 12 rebounds. Matt Tisthammer led Katella (13-4, 0-1) with 15 points.
