Weekend High School Hoops: All The
Leagues, S-Z --(Jan. 10, 1999)

Of course, there is no league in Southern Section which begins with "Z,"  so this one really only goes through the Santa Fe League and ends with the Westside. We managed to collect most of the game results from around SoCal, throughout the Southern Section,  played Friday and Saturday (Unless otherwise indicated, these games were played on Friday). In order to make this a bit more manageable, we've split up our reports by league and we'll be filing several reports, exhausting the entire alphabet soup of the 70 or so leagues in SoCal's Southern Section.   In this one you'll find results and reports on games from the Santa Fe League, Sea View League, Sierra League, South Coast, Suburban, Sunset, Tri-Valley, Victory and Westside League.  Next up: The Non-League games.

Sante Fe League

La Salle 46, Mary Star 35--Junior guard Rudy Brown scored a team-high 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but the Stars (4-8, 0-2) fell to visiting La Salle (1-0 in league).

Sea View League

Newport Harbor 59, Irvine 48-- Irvine's 59-48 loss to Newport Harbor on Friday had an awful and familiar feel to it for the Vaqueros.  When the teams met earlier in the Irvine World News Tournament, Newport Harbor used a 17-5 third quarter to pull away for a 50-37 victory.  On Friday, in the Sea View League opener for both teams, the host Sailors struck again in the third quarter, outscoring the Vaqueros, 21-9. In winning its seventh straight, Newport Harbor (16-2, 1-0) used the same formula--a full-court press that forced a flurry of Irvine turnovers, mixing in a couple of big three-point baskets from Matt Jameson and Gary Robinson with several layups to turn a 23-21 halftime deficit into 42-32 lead. It was a deficit from which Irvine (13-4, 0-1) could not recover. Jameson leaned on and pestered Vaquero guard Chris Ferguson and even so Ferguson scored a game-high 18 points but made only six of 18 field-goal attempts. Jameson scored 14 points, two coming on a halfcourt steal and layup with 15 seconds left to seal the victory.  Irvine forward Tim Rapp had eight points, and 15 rebounds. NH made only seven of 17 free throws in the second half (11 for 23 in the game).

Corona del Mar 51, El Toro 47--Dennis Alshuler scored 17 points to lead the visiting Sea Kings (13-4, 1-0) to a victory in their league opener. Ken Tanaka scored 18 points for the Chargers (11-6, 0-1).

Santa Margarita 60, Woodbridge 44--Host Woodbridge had a six-point lead at the half, but halfway through the third quarter Spencer Gloger hit a three-pointer to put the Eagles in the lead for good. Gloger had 18 of his 26 points in the second half, and was 10 of 13 from the field. The visiting Eagles (14-2, 1-0) won their league opener and Brent Weiss scored 13 points for the Warriors (6-11, 0-1).

Sierra League

Damien 51, West Covina 46-- Sam Roy was the leader down the stretch for the Spartans, scoring Damien's last five points en route to victory. Roy finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Senior center Bobby O'Hara added 19 points and eight rebounds in the win. Joey LaBomme of the Bulldogs led all scorers with 20 points. Damien (11-7, 1-0) looks to continue the momentum at Ayala on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Diamond Bar 51, Ayala 40-- Brian Pichon and Kevin Turner had 15 points each to lead the Brahmas over the Bulldogs. Sophomore Mark Jecman added nine rebounds in the win for Diamond Bar (12-5, 1-0). Jack May and Marcel Burke scored 10 points apiece.

South Coast League

Mater Dei 78, Capistrano Valley 74--Mater Dei trailed Capistrano Valley by 17 points at the half, but came out and rallied to send the game into overtime and then survived a wild finish in the second overtime to escape with the   78-74 victory in front of a standing room only crowd of more than 2,000.  This one was worthy of a highlight reel, and surely set the tone for what is expected to be another dogfight when these teams meet again at Mater Dei.  Cougar Coach Brian Mulligan said before the season his team had the potential to be one of the best the county has seen and for more than three quarters Friday he was right. Capistrano Valley held a 51-37 lead just before the third quarter ended, but Scoggin's three-point basket that beat the buzzer propelled the Monarchs (16-2, 2-0) on a 15-0 run, giving them their first lead, 52-51, with 6 minutes 15 seconds left in regulation, once again, on a Scoggin basket.  From there it was anyone's game and it came down to the final seconds of the second overtime.  Scoggin's basket tied the score, 72-72, but J.J. Sola, who finished with 21 points, scored on a power move under the basket. Mike Bayer, who finished with 16 points, tied it at 74 with two free throws with 41 seconds left. After Mike Stowell missed a layup attempt for the Cougars, light-scoring Imran Sufi got a shot to drop for Mater Dei with six seconds left.  After three timeouts, Capistrano Valley got the ball into Stowell, who missed what would have been the tying layup, and in the ensuing melee, Charles Cangelosi came up with the ball and hit what appeared to be the tying basket as the clock expired.  But as the spectators emptied onto the court, the referees waved off the basket, saying that Cangelosi had fouled Mater Dei's Derrick Mansell before the shot.  An enraged Mulligan charged the officials and had to be restrained. Meanwhile, Mansell made both free throws to end the game.  Mulligan apologized for his actions, but said that he thought Stowell had been fouled first.  "I hate to see this game end on a controversial play,"' Mulligan said. "It wasn't our best second half, so I guess if we are going to hand the game back to them the way we did, they deserve it."  Scoggin finished with 18 points. Stowell scored 20.

San Clemente 71, Dana Hills 38--Mitch Pierce had 19 points and Joe Tatala had 16 for San Clemente (12-4, 1-1).

Trabuco Hills 60, Mission Viejo 57--Matt Cole had 18 points for Mission Viejo (0-2), but Brendon Casey scored 16 and brothers Brendon and Brennon Martin combined for 23 to lead Trabuco Hills.

Suburban League

Artesia 97, La Mirada 50-- Jason Kapono (6'-8" Sr. SG/SF/PG) had 27 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists and the Pioneers used a 32-9 third-quarter run to pull away from the visiting Matadores (0-2 league). Apolinar Fernandez (6'-9" So. PF) had 21 points and Jack Martinez (6'-8" So. PF/C) had 21 points, and the two combined to score 27 of the Pioneers' 32 points in the third quarter. Andre Hazel (6'-1" Sr. PG) also had 10 points for Artesia which is now 13-2 overall having lost only the the City of Palms Classic and to Verbum Dei at the Best in the West. Artesia is 2-0 in league and the win marked its 48th consecutive league victory. Jarrett Aza led La Mirada with 15 points.

Cerritos 62, Glenn 46--A 23-point third quarter propelled the Dons (3-12, 1-0) to victory over the Eagles (2-11, 0-2) at Glenn High. Senior guard Peter Chun scored 12 of his 22 points in the decisive third quarter and teammate Anthony Alexander added 21 points for Cerritos. Jesus Renteria led Glenn with 11 points and Edwin Genera and Michael Diaz added 10 apiece.

Mayfair 68, Bellflower 58--The Monsoons (13-4, 2-0) used a balanced attack led by sophomore forward Josh Childress' 24 points to down the Buccaneers (1-1 in league) at Bellflower High. Sophomore guard Edwin Draughan had 13 points, seven rebounds, and six assists and junior forward Jeff Bonds had 14 points, and eight rebounds, and each made solid contributions to the win for Mayfair, which was 16 of 17 from the free-throw line. Taku Muradzikwa led Bellflower with 18 points amd Marcus Harvey added 17.  Mayfair plays Cerritos next week and then takes on Artesia in a league game at the adidas Double Pump Hoop Challenge on Saturday, January 16, 1999, MLK Holiday weekend.
