Wednesday Night Games, City &
Southern Section Scores--(Jan. 28, 1999)
Seems that when we posted up (or tried to post up) the scores from the Tuesday games this week, in our rush to get them to you, we linked to the wrong article and reposted the scores from Jan. 13. Our bad. We've now fixed that, and the correct article is up. Our thanks to Dave Heredia for pointing out the mistake, and also for posting the correct scores from Tuesday on the Message Forum. So much for feeble apologies. Here are the results from Wednesday's games, at least those we've been able to cobble together. Sorry they're so late, but sometimes life has a way of intruding on basketball. We won't let it happen again. Really.
Bay League
Peninsula 65, Redondo 60-- The Panthers downed the Sea Hawks, 65-60, at Peninsula Wednesday night. Redondo, which figured to share the Bay League championship with Inglewood after splitting with the Sentinels, fell to 14-6 and 7-2 in league. Inglewood now holds sole possession of first place. Peninsula, buoyed by forward Bo Palmer's game-high 24 points, improved to 13-7, 5-3. Jake Dederer added 19 points and Charlie Kundrat had 11 for the Panthers, who held a 33-24 lead at halftime. Peninsula pushed its advantage to 49-31 at the end of the third quarter before the Sea Hawks responded. Behind Andrew Zahn's 23 points and Walter White's 20, Redondo outscored the Panthers 29-16 in the fourth. But the Panthers hit their free throws at the end to seal the game.
Inglewood 65, Centennial 43--Brian Taylor , Skip Esene and Marvin Isaacs scored 16 points apiece as the host Sentinels (21-3, 8-1) won. Taylor made five three-pointers, and Jerod Jenkins had 12 rebounds.

Camino Real League
Don Bosco 56, Cantwell Sacred Heart 47-- Senior guard Adam Garcia scored a game-high 21 points, but it wasn't enough for the Cardinals (4-16, 0-4) to upend the host Tigers.
Channel League
Santa Barbara 74, Dos Pueblos 55-- Sean Kelly (6'-8" Sr. C) scored 22 points for Santa Barbara Wednesday night as the Dons went to Dos Pueblos and won 74-55 in a showdown between the two top basketball teams in the Channel League. Santa Barbara improved to 20-2 with its 13th straight win, and 4-0 in league. Dos Pueblos, which has won the last two league titles, dropped to 16-5 and 3-1.Kelly hit all 9-of-10 shots in the first three quarters, including two 3-pointers, and finished 10-of-14 on the night. He also had 10 rebounds, three blocked shots, a steal and an assist. Kelly is averaging about eight points. Dos Pueblos started the game hot, jumping to a 7-2 lead, but then Kelly squared up and hit a 3-pointer at the top of the key. He would score 10 of the Dons' next 14 points as the game turned into a see-saw affair with several ties and lead changes. The Dons led 35-30 at halftime and never relinquished the lead, though the Chargers kept it close until the final quarter. Shantay Legans (5'-11" Sr. PG) for Dos Pueblos, who will attend the University of California at Berkeley next year and play for the Bears, also had a good game with 24 points, pretty close to his season average. He would have had a few more except that he had two baskets nullified for player control fouls. The second one - on contact made going into Kelly - would have brought Dos Pueblos within a basket at 52-49 with 5:47 to play. Instead it was Legans' fourth foul, sending him to the sidelines. When he returned a few minutes later, Santa Barbara led 59-47. The Dons also got stellar games from Christ and Brent Williams. Christ had 13 points - 10 in the fourth quarter - seven rebounds and three assists. Williams had 18 points. The Dons' normal team leader, Tony Freeman, had a subpar statistical night with nine points and four rebounds. But he spent most of the game guarding Legans and also had to fight through both a cold and foul trouble. He picked up his fourth foul with 6:47 left in the third quarter and spent the rest of the period on the sidelines. Alex Jenkins and Brett Holbrook each had 12 points for Dos Pueblos, but the rest of the Chargers combined for only 10 points. Providence 60, Buckley 45-- Providence avenged a home loss from three weeks ago when Buckley won on January 8th, 65-53. Buckley came out flat and out of sync, and never really got their offense going. It was the third league loss for the Griffins, and also the third time that the opposition ran a four corners motion-spread offense on them; Buckley's 1-3-1 served only to get the guards exhausted by the middle of the third quarter, and that, combined with Providence's usual athleticism and good shooting helped them break out to lead by as many as 23 midway through the third quarter. Providence had 5 players in double figures: Bekmezian with 10, A. Kascinta with 13, P. Kascinta with 14, Jones with 10, and Pedraja with 11.
