Hollywood Wins Van Nuys Tournament--(Jan. 7, 1999)

Hollywood 60, University 45--Van Nuys High School held a small 8 team tournament for the past few days,  and yesterday the Hollywood Shieks, a team which we believe is more than capable of surprising a few opponents this year in City Section, won the whole thing by defeating University 60-45 at Van Nuys High. Tournament MVP Leon Robbins of Hollywod led the team with 16 points as the Sheiks won the championship game. Hassan Trotter was named the tourhnament's most outstanding player (how is that different than MVP?  Well, we guess it's the "MOP") and he had 15 points in the game for University.

Hollywood broke out to a 15-11 lead in the first quarter but Uni came back outscoring the Shieks 14-12 in the second quarfter.  In the third quater Hollywood had the edge 14-13, and in the fourth, Hollywood turned on the defensive pressure, holding Uni to just 7 points while scoring 19 to pull off the win.  Besides Robbins, Craig Banks had 16, Vahe Milikyan had 12, Wright 9, Netters 4, and Fakir 2.   University scoring was by Lewis 3, Angelo Dawson with 8, Johnson 4, White 2, C. Trotter 2, Llambias 3, and Bell with 8.  Hollywood improved to 10-4 while University dropped to 3-6. on the season.

Third Place:

Verdugo Hills 69, Reseda 50--Michael Elliott scored eight fourth-quarter points for Verdugo Hills in the third-place game of the Van Nuys tournament.
Elliott finished with 22 points and had 12 rebounds for Verdugo Hills (4-9).   Reseda's scorers were Funez 3, Robert Arceneau 20, Abtaisso 6, Alvarez 4, Mitchell 2, Thompson 9 and Reguiz 6. Scoring for Vergugo was by Michael Porter with 19, Michael Elliot 23, Wiulliamsk 4, Peterson 6 and Kevin Baird 17. Reseda is now 7-7 overall and Verdugo Hills improves to 4-9 on the year.

Fifth Place:

Kennedy 77, El Camino Real 60--Nana Gbewonyo scored 25 points for Kennedy (8-5) in the fifth-place game of the Van Nuys tournament.   Justin Saad-Anthony had 18 points for El Camino Real (6-7), and teammates Brandon Robertson and Lyndell Anderson each scored 15. Scorers for ECR were Brandon Robertson 15, Lyndell Anderson 15, James 5, Reed 3, Graham 2, Justin Saad-Anthony 18. For Kennedy, Dax Grooms scored 17, R. Grooms scored 2, Webster 9, Jrron Johnson 14, Burns 5, Hamilton 5, Nana Gbweonyo 25.  The Cougars outscored the Conquistadores 41-30 in the second half.

Seventh Place:

Van Nuys 68, Sherman Oaks CES 34--Abe Morabbi scored 40 points and Rocky Daniels had 13 for the Wolves (4-8) in the seventh-place game of the Van Nuys tournament.  Sinclair Brown scored 14 pointsfor the Knights (3-7). Scoring for Van Nys were Ochoa 3, Kang 4, Valles 1, Rocky Daniels 13, Dhaliwal 3, Jones 4, and Abe Morrabi 40.

The MVP was, as we noted, Leon Robbins of Hollywood, and the Most Outstanding Player (geez, we really thought that was a misprint when we read it the first time, but it was probably coach Kanemura's way of recognizing the best player from the No. 2 team in the tournament) was Hassan Trotter.

Here's the rest of the all-tournament team.

Vahe Milikyan--Hollywood
Robert Arceneau --Reseda
Angelo Dawson--University
Kevin Baird --Verdugo Hills
Nana Gbweonyo--Kennedy
