Tuesday Night Games From Around
The Southern Section--(Jan 27, 1999)

Tuesday night is typically not a big night in the Southern Section for boys' basketball games, and mostly these days, the girls games are played on Tuesdays; as Seinfeld would say, "not that there's anything wrong   with that. . . "  We won't repeat what has become our mantra about girls' basketball (we don't have the resources, the time, or the knowledge to cover their games intelligently. . . blah, blah, blah. . . but if somebody else has the desire and inclination we can make it happen. . . blah, blah, blah.)   But last night featured a couple of exciting boys' matchups, and some expected results.  Dominguez won (yawn), and so did Fontana, J.W. North, Upland, Pacific Hills, and Murrieta Valley.  We know we don't have all the results, but we've collected most of them. If you know of some that are missing, or have the results/details/boxes, send them in.

Ocean League

Leuzinger 46, Mira Costa 44-- On the heels of their head coach, Charles Wright, suffering a concussion that's kept him away from the team the past two weeks; the Olympians having to forfeit five Ocean League wins because they used an ineligible player; and a fight between two players after a game last week Leuzinger finally had something go its way Tuesday night. Senior point guard Ron Perodin hit a runner in the lane with two seconds left to lift the Olympians to a 46-44 Ocean League win over host Mira Costa.   It was the first league loss for the Mustangs, who had won the previous meeting. Mira Costa fell to 13-7, 7-1 in league. The Olympians, who erased a five-point deficit with 1:10 remaining, improved to 9-11, 2-6 in league. The victory also gave Leuzinger renewed hope that it can make the playoffs despite forfeiting five league wins. As for the high-scoring Perodin, he couldn't find his shot for most of the game. That is, until the final seconds. In addition to his game-winning basket, he also hit another one of his patented runners at the third-quarter buzzer to give the Olympians a 32-31 lead. Perodin finished with 15 points. The Mustangs opened the fourth quarter strong, pounding it into their 6-foot-9 center, Jesse Boyd, who scored 11 of his 15 points in the final period.
