Valley Referee Will Not Officiate At Alemany--(Jan 12, 1998)

We don't recall whether we saw this one in today's LA Times or Daily News but at the risk of starting another Mission League "flame war" (remember, we will delete messages which get out of hand) we thought it was interesting enough to note that Dave White, a long-standing Valley area referee, will not officiate any more Alemany boys' basketball games this season.  The decision was made by Ed Baker who is in charge of assigning referees for games in the region, and he announced the decision yesterday to the media.

White was allegedly punched by an Alemany player while officiating a game last summer. He was scheduled to work the Alemany game this past Friday, the same game in which Harvard-Westlake beat Alemany, 89-80.    Apparently White was the official responsible for ejecting Reggie Kinlaw, an Alemany player, after he elbowed Eric Geffner about two minutes into the first quarter.

While many in attendance questioned his impartiality, White also called a technical on Harvard-Westlake for dunking during pre-game warmups. Baker told the Times that White is "A very fair official and [the ejection is] probably just a matter of circumstance," Baker said.  Baker said that the decision that White would no longer referee Alemany games was one that was made by "mutual agreement"  Alemany Athletic Director Dudley Rooney also agreed, telling the Times "I think it's best for everybody if he does not do any more of our games," Rooney said.

Oh, and about the player ejected, Reggie Kinlaw?  He had been a football player at San Fernando (he transferred with a couple of other Tiger players to Alemany, following the move of San Fernando assistant Darryl McDonald to the head coaching job at Alemany.   The Daily News this morning wrote of Kinlaw that:

Alemany's Reggie Kinlaw, who was ejected from the Indians' basketball game at Harvard-Westlake last week for throwing an elbow, probably got a little bit more time to finalize his travel plans. Kinlaw, a standout tight end-defensive lineman in football, is being recruited by Idaho, Fresno State, Portland State and Colorado State.

Well, that probably explains the elbow.  We just thought you should know.
