Polys team is built around
Wesley Stokes who could just be the best junior point guard on the West Coast this year.
He's a great passer who can either find the open man or create his own shot off the
dribble or penetrate and finish. Joe Travis, Keyon Cooley and Shea Anderson are the
strongs links in the frontcourt, along with reserve Jim Kresel. At the wing position will
be Marcus Sargeant, Lionel Pennman Kenny Wright and David Williams. Backing up Wesley will
be David Word, Rahman Shotwell, and Tim Thomas. Poly won the summer version of the Best in
the West, and finished high last month at the winter version of the same tourney. Look for
them to go deep in playoffs this season and possibly challenge for a D-IAA title.
Jordan is really an enigmatic team; capable
of finishing very well in tournament play, and then just absolutely tanking this past week
against Moore League rival Compton High, a game that they lost by, if we recall, something
like 26 points. Which team will show up tomorrow is anyone's guess, but we're
betting it's the "good" Jordan, the same one that has won CIF SS I-AA titles
three times in the 1990's, and the one which could do it again this year. This team
is fresh off a 5th place finish in the Best in the West, and trying to
forget last week's game against Tito Maddox & Co., they feature the top senior guard
combo of Craig Calloway (CSUN) and Darren Petersen, who are averaging close to 20 ppg
each, and the top junior power forward in Southern Cal, Trayvon Bryant. Deryon Dale and
Ron Banks are two of the best wing players this year. At small forward look for Greg Grant
and Wilfred Lucas, and Wilfred will also see some time relieving Trayvon at the post.
Eric Gathrite, Nick Tamaro, and James Lundon have all played well so far this
season, and there are a lot of other new faces who will make definite contributions.
Should be some great matchups, especially at the
point with Wesley and Calloway going at it and down low with Travon and Keyon Cooley and
Joe Travis banging around, with guys like Shea Anderson. Clearly, Poly has the height;
whether they've got the needed depth is something we'll all find out tomorrow.
A great game, 7:30 p.m. at Cal State Dominguez
Hills. See you there.
