The sixth game of the day will tip-off at 4:30 p.m. between the 4:30 p.m. the Inglewood Sentinels v. Redondo Beach Seahawks, a league game (which will be repeated on Monday at Pauley Pavilion by these two teams). Here are the rosters:
Inglewood
Sentinels Brian Taylor (6'-0" Jr. PG) |
Redondo Beach
Seahawks Sam Chance (5'-10" Jr. G) |
This is a matchup of some of the best big men int he west, Noel Felix and Skip Esene for Inglewood against one of the top juniors in the country, Andrew Zahn. Inglewood may look deeper on paper, but that's why games aren't played on paper.
The Sentinels went 26-5 last year, and return almost everyone. Last year they lost to eventual D-II State Champs, but this year look to challenge for a SS title and a deep run in the State Tournament. Last month they finished 9th at the Las Vegas Reebok Tournament, beating Arizona State Champion Mt. View. The Sentinels feature two of the best big men in the senior class, Skip Esene and Noel Felix, who are averaging 15 ppg. Noel is being recruited by San Jose State, Oregon State, Arizona State, Washington State, and UNLV. Brian Taylor who is looking at OSU and Georgia Tech will handle the point with Sandy Fletcher and Marvin Isac at the two. At the forward spots also look for Jenkins and Steward who will also cover the post for Noel at times.
Redondo was apprehensive before the season with the transfer of their leading point guard Marcus Moore to Compton Dominguez, but it hasn't seemed to slow the Seahawks down at all. Last year, with Moore, they advanced to the State D-II semifinal game losing to State Champion Santa Margarita. Redondo has never won a State title, but might this year with junior start Andrew Zahn, a first team All-CIF and Ocean League MVP selection. Joe Buck and Paul Meynen also provide depth at the center spot, while Walter White and Titus Hunt provide the muscle and shooting in the frontcourt. At two will be Dylan Mathis, a quick, athletic player, Andrew Morris, the best pure shooter on the team. Evans and Chance (where's Tinker. . . sorry, an old baseball joke. . . couldn't resist) could also see time at the two. Dijon Thompson at point is exciting, quick, athletic, and "plays like Jamal Wilkes," says coach Nielsen, with blazing speed like the smaller guys. Backing up will be Keith Ellison, one of the most talented freshmen on the west coast this year.
A great game, 4:30 p.m. at Cal State Dominguez Hills. See you there.
