Predictions & Results From All Over SoCal--(Jan. 7, 1999)
Every now and then, that camel known as "work" sticks his big nose into the tent. When he shows up, we sometimes aren't able to write as much as we'd like as often as we'd like. This week, notwithstanding that it's the first week of the "second season" aka the regular high school season, we've had to tend to the camel a bit, you know, feed him, water him, tell him to go away more than a few times. But once we got rid of him, we could return to the reason most of you all check in with us: Hoops. No, we're not talking about the NBA, which we hear may be back, but high school games.
We managed to find time for a little update again, with scores, notes, some box scores and and results from around the region. Only a few leagues have actually gotten underway, but in quite a few of the leagues this year there will be no big surprises, so let us make a few really educated (or really stupid) predictions: Artesia will take the Suburban League; Claremont is a leader in the Baseline league at 12-3 and they've beaten Rowland already and could give Glendora and Upland in Baseline League some trouble. In Mission League, it's a wide open race, but Alemany, Crespi and Chaminade are the favorites, and it's possible that perennial league favorite Harvard-Westlake might just finish behind Loyola in fifth. The Citrus Belt League will be between Fontana and Eisenhower, and maybe Rialto will give them a run. In Liberty League, watch for Providence, Buckley and maybe Avalon, as perennial favorites Yeshiva and Holy Martyrs are struggling. In the Inland Empire area's Mt. Baldy League, it's Etiwanda, Rancho Cucamonga and maybe Ontario, but if Adam Parada can get the rest of the team to score, maybe Alta Loma. In Marmonte League, it's a race between Simi and Moorpark (and maybe Newbury Park which should make the playoffs again this year.). The Miramonte League will be between Garey, Pomona, and maybe Hacienda Heights Los Altos. In Moore League, we're going to go out on a limb and pick. . . . Jordan. Compton doesn't really have much of a chance the way they played in the BIW. In the San Gabriel Valley League, look for Dominguez to win it all. Really no surprise there. In the Ocean League it's anyone's race, and in Bay League, newly revamped, look for Inglewood to take the top spot. At least these are our predictions based on play up until now. Wonder how much of this we'll have to eat by the time playoffs roll around.
Why some of the predicitions? Well, for example, in Mission League, Crespi knocked off Harvard-Westlake for the second time in two months (last was at the Thousand Oaks tourney in December); Alemany, the lowly of lowlies for the last who-knows-how-many-years, finally is whipping everyone's butt now that the cavalry has arrived courtesy of former San Fernando coach Darryl McDonald who as the head coach at Alemany brought with him half a team; Liberty League is clearly wide open: Last night, Providence beat Yeshiva, Buckley hammered Oakwood, and on Monday (we are told) Holy Martyrs, an always tough team of guys who all are burly, stand no less than 6'-1" and can all shoot coming off screens lost by something like 20 points to Windward, a team which got hammered badly by just about everyone who played them in summer league. But that's why this isn't summer league any more. Chaminade will also continue to win, not a big surprise there, but the biggest surprise is that over in City Section, Cleveland struggles with great players like Kent Dennis and Kenny Mason. In the East Valley League, Gilbert Arenas scores yet another 30. Ho-hum.
In Marmonte League, Simi Valley surprised absolutely no one in finally beating the Dan Bobik-less Newbury Park Panthers, by something like 30 points, and perhaps Moorpark will be the only team in Marmonte League this year capable of giving them even a decent fight, and maybe beating them with Todd Tomlinson (6'-0" Jr. SG) who is the leading scorer so far this season in the entire Southern Section for the Valley-Ventura County area, and Sean Corkery, (6'-0" Sr. PG) who is right up there in assists, feeding Todd all those great passes.
And that's just in the Valley region. In Orange County yesterday, Tustin decided to bench it's best two players (including freshman DeAngelo Collins) for reasons that are not entirely clear, and Ocean View just pounds them; of course, Torrin Beeler (6'-3" So. SG/SF) hit for something like 17 points and played great, but we're sure he'd rather play great against better competition.
Enough of the commentary. Here are the actual game results (they're organized by alphabetical order, by league and by the winning team's first letter):
Bay League
Inglewood 55, Compton Centennial 52--Despite getting a triple-double from Washington State signee Marquis Poole (21 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists), the Apaches (6-8, 0-1) were unable to handle the Sentinels (1-0 in league).
Morningside 49, South Torrance 35--Dwayne Trotter had 16 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Monarchs (6-7, 1-0) over the visiting Spartans (6-7, 0-1).
Redondo 56, Peninsula 51--The Sea Hawks (8-4, 1-0) got a little more than they bargained for in the Bay League opener for both teams, as Peninsula's 1-2-2 zone held Redondo to 19 first-half points, and the Panthers took a 12-point lead at the break. Peninsula (8-4, 0-1) clamped down on Zahn, holding the high-scoring junior to only three points all on free throws in the first half. But Zahn bounced back in the second half to score 14 of his game-high 17 points. And as Zahn went, so did the Sea Hawks. Redondo, just 7 of 20 shooting in the first half, opened the third quarter with a 10-3 run, and went on another run, 13-2, early in the fourth quarter. Titus Hunt's three-pointer gave the Sea Hawks a 54-46 lead with 3:27 left in the game. Peninsula never trailed in the first half as forward Bo Palmer scored 15 points. The Panthers were also buoyed by the play of 6-9 center Jake Dederer (14 points, 10 rebounds), who held Zahn in check in the first half. But in the end, the Panthers couldn't handle the inside play of Zahn and forward Walter White. Along with Zahn's 17 points, he notched nine rebounds, five blocks and three assists. White, who scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half, also had nine rebounds.
Santa Monica 64, North Torrance 52-- Jermel Brooks tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists, but the host Saxons (7-6 overall) fell to the Vikings in both teams' league opener.
City Section--Non-Conference:
Chatsworth 75, Canoga Park 63--Ronald Ruffin, Richard Harrison and Mark Cannon each scored 17 points for Chatsworth (8-3) in a nonconference game at Canoga Park (3-10). Harrison had 14 rebounds and Ruffin grabbed nine. Cannon had 13 assists. Mike Gomes had 24 points and 12 rebounds for Canoga Park
Grant 78, Birmingham 62--Gilbert Arenas scored 30
points and Daniel Tarr had 16 for host Grant (11-3), ranked No. 8 in the
region, in a nonconference game.

Golden West League
Ocean View 59, Tustin 44-- The Tillers had two starters benched for disciplinary reasons, lost their Golden West League opener to sixth-ranked Ocean View, 59-44. The Tillers committed 24 turnovers, and Ocean View put on a strong defensive performance, holding the Tillers to only 17 of 43 field goals in their gym. But the luster of this showdown was gone before the tip-off. Starting center DeAngelo Collins (6'-9" Fr. C) averages 14 rebounds, who did not suit up after violating an unspecified school rule, according to Athletic Director Al Rosmino. And starting wing forward Chris Chatman, a 6-5 junior, was benched for the first half for violating team rules. In their absence, Ocean View guards had a much easier time getting the ball inside and the Seahawks dominated the scoring in the post area with a variety of layups and put-backs. Ocean View jumped on top quickly, taking a 17-5 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Tustin never got closer than nine points after that. Tustin made a brief run in the second quarter and cut its deficit to 23-17. But that was as close as the Tillers would get. The Seahawks were up by 12 at halftime. The Seahawks' Torin Beeler led all scorers with 17 points. Ocean View senior guard Tony Dow, All-Orange County second team last season, scored 11 and had seven assists. Jeremiah Bell (6'-2" Jr. F) came off the Seahawks' bench to score 12. Cameron Jackson paced the Tillers with 12 points.
Santa Ana 58, Westminster 47--Santa Ana took a 15-3 lead after one quarter, but had to come back at home after a third quarter Westminster rally led the Lions (0-1 in league) to a two-point lead. Forward Darnell Graham scored 21 points and had 16 rebounds for Santa Ana (8-8, 1-0) and Rene Cabrera added 20 points.
Servite 67, Saddleback 53-0-Evan Friedl scored 22 points as the Friars used a big first quarter, in which they outscored Saddleback 20-8, to win at home. Servite continuted scoring well into the second quarter with 22 to Saddleback's 17, and then escaped with two low scoring quarters (13 and 12) in the second half. Awecirw impeocwa ro 9-7 overall and is 1-0 in league play. Saddleback is 0-1 in league.
Liberty League
Buckley 43, Oakwood 30-- In Buckley's league-opener, Colin Ward-Henninger (6'-3" So. SG/SF) scored 13 points while Sasha Rahban (5'-11" Sr. SG) scored 11 including two three-pointers in a low-scoring defensive game. David Gale (5'-10" Fr. PG) again led the Griffins in steals with 6, and assists with 5, while Rahban and Ward-Henninger also had 4 steals each. Others scoring were Adam Paster (6'-0" Jr. PG/SG) 5, David Gale 3, Roayl Weaver (5'-10" So. SG) 7, Simon Leonov (6'-3" So. SF) 2, Josh Ahkterzad (6'-1" Sr. SF) 2, Rahban 11 and Ward-Henninger 13. Buckley is now 1-0 in Liberty League, and 6-3 overall.
Marmonete League
Simi Valley 77, Newbury Park 47-- The Pioneers took apart host Newbury Park 77-47 Wednesday in a Marmonte League boys' basketball game. They did it with a crisp, balanced offense in which five players scored in double figures. Defensively, they forced Newbury Park into bad shots and held Brian Bobik to 10 points. There was a bright spot, Brian Polen scored 16 for the Panthers, and one of the local papers (either the Daily News or the Times, we don't recall) had a really great picture of him battling Rafael Berumen for a rebound. All five Simi starters scored in double figures Rafael Berumen scoredg 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, Brett Michel had 20 points and eight rebounds and, Branduinn Fullove had 17 points; Sophomore point guard Shaun Michel had 10 points and sophomore Dustin Villepigue (6'-9" So. F) scored 13 points. Newbury Park (9-4, 1-1) upset Simi Valley twice last year behind two brilliant performances from Daniel Bobik. But Bobik left for Brigham Young University. The Pioneers led 41-25 at halftime, then opened a 50-29 lead two minutes into the third. They led by as many as 31 points in the fourth quarter.
Agoura 54, Westlake 51--Garrett Lepisto scored 19
points and Agoura withstood a fourth-quarter rally in a Marmonte League opener at
Westlake. Agoura (7-6) led, 48-31, with 6:00 left, but Westlake went on an 18-3 run.
Westlake (7-8) trailed, 51-49, and had possession with 18 seconds
left, but committed a turnover.

Russell Lakey scored 25 points for Harvard-Westlake (8-8, 1-1) before fouling out with three minutes to play. The Celts went on an 18-11 run in the final four minutes to pull out the victory. Tibbetts added seven assists, and four other players -- Marcin Jagoda, Andrew Moore, Tim McDonough and Pat Dornan -- scored in double figures for the Celts. Jagoda had seven rebounds and four steals to go along with his 19 points.
Alemany 74, Notre Dame 59--After posting a 1-23 record in Mission League play the last two seasons, Alemany (8-4, 1-0) continued its turnabout in the league opener. Alemany's Devin Montgomery was scoreless after the first quarter but Notre Dame High trialed by 11. Montgomery then scored 24 points (10 in the first three minutes of the second quarter). Montgomery's second-quarter spurt capped a 25-4 run and allowed Alemany (8-4, 1-0) to coast most of the way. Casey Clausen had 10 points, all on free throws, and Bryson Atkins, a football defensive back, also had 10. Eight players scored at least seven. Alemany led by 18 midway through the second period. Notre Dame dug a hole with a combination of sloppy ballhandling, ill-advised fouls and bad shooting. But the Knights played a lot better toward the end of the first half. They cut a 30-12 deficit to 38-31 early in the third quarter. Notre Dame's Chris Williams (22 points) scored 13 in the first half. The early lead would have been bigger if Alemany converted its free throws instead of making just 9 out of 18. Cody Pearson added 14 points for Notre Dame (6-9, 0-1). Dante Ward had 11.
Northern League
Arroyo Grande 59, Righetti 50--Sean Shields made back to back baskets and grabbed a

opener. Shields finished with 20 points, including four three-pointers.
Righetti came out cold in the fourth quarter and didn't make a field goal until
there was 1:15 remaining. "That four points at the end of the third quarter was
huge," said Arroyo Grande coach Jeff Byars. "We built that into a nice
comfortable lead, and then let it get interesting." The Eagles improve to 7-8
and 1-0 in the Northern League. Phillip Johnson led all scorers with 22 points for
the Eagles, with 13 points in the final period. He went 10 of 15 from the free-throw line
as the Warriors tried to rally late. Righetti came within six points, but were kept
at a distance with Johnson's 13 points over the final eight minutes. Arroyo Grande went to
the box-and-one in the second half and Righetti just didn't respond. Righetti is 8-7
overall and 0-1 in league play. The Warriors led for 21 minutes, including a 25-23
lead at halftime. That's until Arroyo Grande's grabbed its second lead of the night with
Shield's four-point run. Schuyler Linnemann came off the bench for the Eagles in the
