San Diego Nike National Prep Classic:
Some Final Results--(Jan 4, 1999)
Ok, so we've been incredibly slow getting results up for this tournament, but that's not for lack of trying. We've just been literally overwhelmed with the amount of tournament information we've had to process. Of course, this really was a series of tournaments and not one big tournament like the Reebok Las Vegas Holiday Prep Classic, and there were six separate, individual brackets. None of the the teams playing in one bracket played the other brackets, so you really have six different "Champions." We will be filling in the complete brackets, the one's we posted earlier about a week and half ago, so you'll have a complete picture of what happened, but for those who can't wait, here's what we know:
National Division Champions: St. Anthony's
American Division Champions: Inglewood
Mayor's Cup "Emerald" Division Champions: Springville (Utah)
Governor's Cup "Pearl" Division Champions: John Muir (Pasadena)
Governor's Cup "Diamond" Division Champions: Timpanogos (Utah)
Mayor's Cup "Ruby" Division Champions: Robert McQueen (Reno, NV)
Here's the San Diego Nike National Prep Classic All Tournament Team, in alphabetical order:

American Division MVP: Brian Taylor-- Inglewood
Aaron Abrams--Rancho Buena Vista | Todd Billett--Christian Brothers |
Rafael Berumen--Simi Valley | Tony Dow--Ocean View |

Game Highlights and Scores:
In the National Division final, St. Anthony's made it to the title game by beating Villa Park, Crossroads, and Crenshaw. Simi beat USDHS, Christian Brothers, and Rancho Buena Vista. The final score of the St. Anthony's v. Simi game was 74-53. Only four players scored for Simi Valley. Branduinn Fullove led Simi Valley (11-2) with 16 points. Rafael Berumen and Brett Michel each scored 14 points, and Dustin Villepigue added nine. Berumen (6'-9" Sr. C) scored 11 points in the second half, including eight in the fourth quarter. Michel made four three-point baskets, three in the second quarter. Berumen averaged 17 points in five games, and Fullove averaged 15. Sophomore guard Tony Tate of St. Anthony finished with 15 and was selected MVP of the bracket, the only St. Anthony player selected to the all-tournament team, which was pretty unusual in our view since it's pretty typical that at least two of the winning team's players make it.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, "Tony Tate
sat in his chair and buried his head in a towel" after the game. "Being selected
MVP of the Nike Prep Classic was almost too much for the sophomore guard. . ."It was
very emotional," said Tate, "I didn't expect it. I just wanted to win the game
and get back to New Jersey." Tate was also the starting point guard last year
when the Friars downed St. Dominic's. The Bob Hurley-coached Friars had a game plan that
included smothering Simi's point guard Shaun Michel and fronting Berumen, while denying
Fullove any three point shots. "They looked like the Globetrotters in the
semifinals," Tate told the Union-Tribune. "They were moving the ball so well. We
had to take them out of their game."
Simi was unable to penetrate the matchup zone, and Berumen was not able to get the ball
either, resulting in him scoring only two points in the first half. St. Anthony's on the
other hand got 11 points from Tate and went ahead by 6, 30-24 lead. Brett Michel's
three three pointers in the first half kept Simi Valley close, but St. Anthony's halftime
adjustments worked even better in the second half. St. Anthony's Wayne McClinton and
Elijah Ingram each scored eight points as the Friars put the game away in the third
quarter, outscoring Simi 24-16 for the quarter. Tate and Ingram finished with 15
points each, McClinton
and Maurice Jackson added 12 and reserve Walik Wilson scored 10.
The U-T had some nice quotes about the game too:
"The team we saw today was outstanding," said Bradshaw. "That's one of the better defensive performances I've seen all year."
"If we would have gone out of here 2-2, we would have still been happy," said Hurley. "I felt we've really grown as a team. I'm extremely satisfied."
St. Anthony's is a program traditionally found in the national rankings, but the Friars aren't rated in the latest USA Today rankings. "Hey, we like not being ranked," Tate told the U-T. "They can keep us out as long a they want."
National Division Third Place Game:
Crenshaw 83, Rancho Buena Vista 68--Jonathan Stokes and Lucien Johnson scored 26 and 25 points, respectively, as Crenshaw (11-3) beat Rancho Buena Vista 83-68 for third place in the National Division. Aaron Abrams led RBV (10-4) with 25 points. The Longhorns matched Crenshaw in the third and fourth quarters.

In the American Division:
Championship Game:
Inglewood 70, Eisenhower 59--With a league record of
96-2 the past seven seasons, it's difficult to exceed expectations at Inglewood High. But
the Sentinels managed to do that this week at the Nike Prep Classic. Yesterday they won
the American Division championship, rolling over Rialto Eisenhower, 70-59, at Cox Arena.
"I would have been happy with a 2-2 split in this tournament," Inglewood coach
Pat Roy said. "The key for us is different people stepped up and got the job
done." Inglewood (13-2) displayed balance in beating Juanita, Wash., St. Augustine
and Capistrano Valley on the way to the championship. In the final, five players finished
in double figures scoring, led by Skip Essene's 18 points. "Teams come and scout us
and they don't know who's going to step up," said Roy, an Inglewood alum. "We
don't know either."
Inglewood outrebounded Eisenhower 12-4 in the opening quarter, leading to an 18-11
advantage on the scoreboard. The Sentinels led by as many as 13
late in the third quarter as Noel Felix wooed the crowd with a reverse slam dunk. Felix, a
6-foot-9 senior, came off the bench to score 15 points and
grab four rebounds. He has been offered scholarships from seven Division I schools but is
undecided. Sandy Fletcher, another college prospect, collected 12 points and eight
rebounds, Marvin Issacs 15 points and eight rebounds and American Division MVP Brian
Taylor 10 points. Eisenhower produced a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter, cutting it to
five, but that's as close as it came. Five-foot-10 guard Trenell Eddings was a big part of
the comeback effort, scoring 15 of his team-high 18 points in the second half.
Third Place Game:
Capistrano Valley 70, Charlotte Christian 63--Capistrano
Valley rallied from a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime before
defeating Charlotte (N.C.) Christian, 70-63, Thursday in the third-place game of the
American Division in the Nike National Prep Classic at San Diego State.
J.J. Sola scored 18 of his 28 points after halftime and Nate Hair scored six of his 15
points in overtime to lead the Cougars (13-2). Ollie Sturtson scored 16 points for
Charlotte Christian.
