Monday Game Results From Around SoCal--(Jan. 12, 1998)

Monday is not a big day in the Southern Section, and it's an even less important day in the LA City Section. There were a handful of games played yesterday and we managed to get details on most of them. Here's what we were able to find.  If you know of a score or the details of a game we didn't get, drop us a note and we'll be happy to include the result.

Bay League

Morningside 82, North Torrance 64--Morningside forced 27 turnovers and Dwayne Trotter netted a game-high 27 points as the Monarchs beat North Torrance, 82-64, in a Bay League contest at North. Jermel Brooks led the Saxons (7-8, 0-3) with 19 points.

Redondo 74, South Torrance 42--Andrew Zahn had 23 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks and the Sea Hawks (10-4, 3-0) had a 42-25 scoring advantage in the second half during their win at Redondo.

Inglewood 75, Peninsula 60--Skip Esene had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Noel Felix added 19 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks to lead the Sentinels (16-2, 3-0) at Inglewood.

Garden Grove League

Los Amigos 59, Bolsa Grande 56--Alvaro Arcos made all five of his free throws in the fourth quarter and his rebound of David Ly's missed three-pointer in the final seconds secured host Los Amigos' 59-56 victory over Bolsa Grande in a Garden Grove League boys' basketball game Monday.  Arcos finished with 15 points and Isaac Hurtado also had 15 points for the Lobos (12-5, 3-0 in league), who made nine of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Jon James scored 17 points for Bolsa Grande (8-9, 1-2).

Pacifica 74, La Quinta 59--Danny Dihn scored 11 of his 22 points in the third quarter when visiting Pacifica extended its lead to 18. Dihn made six three-pointers for the Mariners (15-1, 2-0).  Chris Smith scored 22 points, including four three-pointers, for La Quinta (9-7, 1-2).

Rancho Alamitos 82, Santiago 52--Cuby Vantich had 28 points and seven assists and Willie Montgomery scored 21 points for host Rancho Alamitos (8-8, 2-0), which led, 43-20, at halftime.  Vantich made four of his five three-pointers in the first half and the Vaqueros made eight of 17 three-point attempts.   Miguel Soriano scored 17 points for Santiago (2-15, 0-3).

Marmonte League

Simi Valley 89, Moorpark 70--Leading by five at the half, Simi Valley High extended the lead in the second half by 14 points to come away with the win over host Moorpark.  One of the key's to the game was very balanced scoring, and great defense, especially by Branduinn Fullove (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF)who pretty much managed to shut down Moorpark's scoring leader Todd Tomlinson (6'-0" Jr. SG) , holding him to 12 points on three-of-10 shooting. Fullove scored 18 points.  The Pioneers (14-2, 3-0 in league play), went on a 20-8 surge in the third quarter to turn the game into a rout.  Rafael Berumen finished with 27 points, Brett Michel had 19 points and 13 rebounds and Dustin Villepigue contributed 13 points and 13 rebounds. Shaun Michel had 10 points and 10 assists.  During a 10-2 streak to start the second half, each of the five Simi Valley starters contributed a basket.  The 6-foot-9 Berumen and the 6-8 Villepigue were too much for Moorpark (10- 6, 1-2), especially when the Musketeers couldn't get their three-point shots to fall.  Shawn Corkery scored 19 points to lead Moorpark.

Mission Leauge

Alemany 67, Loyola 54--Devin Montgomery scored 15 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter to help the Indians pull away in a Mission League game at Loyola.  Alemany (9-5, 2-1), ranked No. 9 in the region, outscored Loyola, 21-11, in the fourth quarter.  The Indians played without starting forward Reggie Kinlaw, who sat out under Southern Section rules after being ejected from Alemany's 89-80 loss to Harvard-Westlake on Friday.  Ryan Mollins scored 23 points for Loyola (12-5, 1-2).

St. Francis 56, Notre Dame 51--Derek Lavelle scored 11 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 10 rebounds to lead host St. Francis (11-6, 1-2) in a Mission League game.  Shaun Scranton scored eight of his 17 points in the fourth quarter for St. Francis.  There were 31 lead changes and the largest difference between the two teams was five points.  Notre Dame dropped to 7-10, 1-2. Monday night's Mission League affair between St. Francis and Notre Dame High's was a must win for both teams. Both had gotten off to slow starts in the league, something they could not afford. But in the end, Jordan's team wanted it more as St. Francis edged Notre Dame, 56-51 in a boys' basketball game at St. Francis High.  LaVelle's teammate, Shaun Scranton had a big game as well, scoring 17 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Scranton and LaVelle did a good job defensively in the post, guarding   Chris Williams (6'-8" Sr. PF/C) from Notre Dame. Williams, who has signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Notre Dame (7-10, 1-2) led 37-35 heading into the fourth quarter, but broke down in the final minutes. Trailing 52-51, Williams failed to give Notre Dame the lead as he came up short on a shot just in front of the 3-point line. From there, St. Francis hit key free throws to prevail. We're a pretty good shooting team.  Notre Dame left the first quarter holding a small 12-11 advantage. Williams looked to be unstoppable in the quarter, scoring seven points and grabbing six rebounds. LaVelle scored seven himself for St. Francis. St. Francis led 21-18 with a minute remaining in the second quarter, but Notre Dame's Cody Pearson ran off five quick points, capped off by a break away slam dunk to lead 23-21 at the half. Pearson finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.  Jeff Brown had a solid game for St. Francis, scoring 10 points. Dante Ward scored 12 points for Notre Dame.  Here's the box: Notre Dame 12 11 14 14--51;   St. Francis 11 10 14 21--56  Scoring for ND was Ward 12, Williams 18 and 13 rebounds, Pearson 15 and 9 rebounds, Barton 4, Griffin 2. 3-pointers: Pearson 2. Ward.   St. Francis scoring: Brown 10. Scranton 14 and 8 rebounds. LaVelle 30 and 5 rebounds. Duffus 2. 3-pointers: Scranton. LaVelle. Brown.

Santa Fe League

La Salle 82, Bell Jeff 49--La Sall combined to hit nine 3-point shots Monday night over the visiting Bell-Jeff Guards.  La Salle improved to 11-4 overall and 2-0 in league. Albert Aquino scored six of his team-high 16 points from 3-point range in the first quarter, as did Jason Kenoyer, who went on to score 14 points as did forward Brian Brisbin.  A 9-2 run to start the second quarter helped the Lancers to a 41-23 halftime lead. Bell Jeff, which dropped to 8-9 overall and 1-1 in league tried to claw their way back, and Mike Yildiz put up half of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter alone, but it was not enough to overcome the defense of LaSalle and the great shooting of La Salle forward Kelsey Foster and Kenoyer

Suburban League

Artesia 72, Mayfair 46-- Artesia cruised past league rival Mayfair, in anticipation of their matchup this Saturday, January 16 at Cal State Dominguez Hillsat the adidas Double Pump Hoop Challenge.  Wayne Merino got his 300th career coaching win, and Artesia picked up it's 49th straight Suburban League win last night. Jack Martinez (6'-8" So. F) scored a game-high 23 points and Jason Kapono (6'-8" Sr. PG/SG/SF/PF) added 20 to lead Artesia to a 72-46 victory over the visiting Monsoons. Merino's teams teams have won four CIF Southern Section championships and three state titles.  His coaching record after last night's game is now 300-56. He's been coaching for the past 12 years. Here's Louis Johnson's partial report of the game from the Long Beach Press-Telegram: " The Pioneers (14-2, 3-0) played a suffocating man-to-man defense in the first half that held the Monsoons scoreless for nearly an eight-minute stretch in the first and second quarters, as the team took a 35-16 halftime lead. Mayfair (12-5, 2-1) played better offensively in the second half, but Kapono and Martinez made sure the Monsoons never got closer than 15 points after the break. Freshman Franklin Matos added 11 points for Artesia. Sophomore Josh Childress scored 17 points for Mayfair, 14 of which came in the second half."  Sorry we missed it and congratulations to Coach Wayne Merino.  We can't wait to see the next 300.

Bellflower 75, Cerritos 68--The Monsoons (2-1 league) made 10 of 12 free throws down the stretch and Marcus Harvey led the team with 17 points in a victory over the Dons (4-13, 1-1) at Cerritos High.
