Jason Kapono Recruiting Update--(Jan. 31, 1999)
Well, as everyone suspects, there is absolutely no news on the Jason Kapono recruiting front. Nothing. Nada.
We talked at some length last night with Joe Kapono, Jason's dad, and he told us that Jason absolutely will not "commit" until he signs a National Letter of Intent in the spring. Joe told us, "I really don't understand why kids 'commit' early; either you sign a letter or you don't. Why all this fuss about 'committing?' When Jason makes up his mind, he'll sign a letter in the spring," Joe told us. "But for now, he's really just focused on winning a State Title."
So for now, while Jason is still focusing on the season, it's safe to say that he still has the same schools on his list: Rhode Island, UNLV, Utah, Missouri, and possibly Cal.
We also asked Joe about the rumors circulating that UCLA was again involved with Jason's recruiting, and all Joe could do was smile and laugh.
Smile and laugh.
"Geez, where do people come up with this stuff," Joe said with an exasperated grin.
"This is a really big life decision for Jason. It's about academics, about his ability to contribute to the team, and it's about a whole lot more than most people will ever know," Mr. Kapono told us.
Actually we think it's about which school has the cutest girls. Really. And we said as much to Joe, sort of baiting him with that one. He didn't blink: "Jason's a very smart, careful young man, and he'll make his decision when he makes it. And I guess we'll all find out then. And it's about more than which school has the cutest girls," Joe said.
