The Second Season Begins: Compiled
Results From Tuesday--(Jan. 6, 1999)

The "second season," i.e., the regular season, non-tournament post-December, pre-playoff portion of the high school season got underway for most teams starting this past Monday, and it really got rolling yesterday. There are still a couple of tournaments going on, mostly in City Section for teams who are still on vacation from classes (City Section is strange that way, as most of the kids attending LAUSD don't go back to school for another week, whereupon they promptly get off a couple of days for the MLK, Jr., National Holiday. . . ah, it wasn't like this when we attended school. . . you know, we had to walk through the snow, five miles. . . . blah, blah, blah). Anyway, the games got underway in earnest Monday, and we've got some scores and results compiled from games played yesterday and Monday, virtually all from the Southern Section, but a few in City, i.e., the Van Nuys Tournament, which features Van Nuys, Hollywood, Monroe, and a couple of others.

Southern Section Non-League:

Arlington 46, Hemet 41--When Hemet and Riverside Arlington played last season, it was a meeting between two graceful star players in Moises Alvarez and Jimmy Miggins. When the two schools met up Tuesday night, it was just plain ugly. When the dust settled, Arlington emerged with a 46-41 victory over the visiting Bulldogs. Hemet has lost four of its past five, the one victory coming over Anza Hamilton at the Mustang Shootout.  "It was an ugly game, and we were uglier than they were," Hemet coach Alex Boyd said. "At least they were an ugly duckling and rose up to be a swan. We didn't." Neither team had a lot to be proud of, as the two combined for 48 turnovers in the contest. Arlington (6-9), which led from wire to wire, went on a 12-2 run in the first half and led by as many as 14 points in the second half. Damio Ware's basket put the Lions up 38-24 with 27 seconds left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs (7-6) finally made a run as the fourth quarter started, outscoring the Lions 15-4 to get to within one point with 52 seconds left. The two teams traded possessions before Arlington's Kurt Larsen hit two free throws to put the Lions up 44-41 with 19 seconds left. Hemet had a chance to tie, but James Draine's pass skipped off A.J. Voto's hands and out of bounds with nine seconds on the clock. The Bulldogs fouled Larsen, who hit two more free throws to put the game away.  The Bulldogs were victimized by poor free throw shooting, going 8 of 14. It was the first game back for Draine after missing the Mustang Shootout for a family trip. Draine, a sophomore, was 1 of 8 from the field with two rebounds and an assist. Hemet scoring was by Draine 5, Voto 5, Marquez 6, Day 14, Christiansen 5, Rees 5, Ziegler 1. Arlington scorers were Hart 9, Willman 2, Glover 13, Larsen 16, Hatton 2, Ware 2, Carter 2. Inzunza kept the Warriors in the game, as he scored 11 of his 22 points in the second half, hitting three straight three-pointers to bring Troy to within two points with about 5:00 left in the half.  As the Orange County Register noted, it was an emotional game: "After he sank his third three-pointer, Inzunza looked over at Dodd sitting on the Wildcats bench then turned to the crowd and screamed."  But Dodd wasn't fazed, and he scored the first 7 points in the second half, including an NBA-length three-pointer over Inzunza, as Brea Olinda outscored the Warriors 17-5 in the third quarter to pull away.
