adidas Double Pump Hoop Challenge:
Chaminade Beats Los Al--(Jan. 17, 1999)
Los Al was pushed pretty hard on Friday night by Fountain Valley in a game which the Griffins won 54-52, so it was no wonder that they looked tired and worn out a little more than 24 hours after that game concluded. And Chaminade, a team which deserves lots of respect really doesn't get any. And coach Young really believes that Chaminade is not treated well by the local press. And his point may be well taken: The defending CIF Southern Section D-III Champions are becoming the Rodney Dangerfields of the Valley: Lose a couple of games, and look what happens; nobody love you. The Daily News, which is lately just in love with Crespi (ahhh, do we sense a sort of Laker connection here) didn't even publish a report of yesterday's game between Chaminade and Los Alamitos.
Well, that's ok; the Times did, and so did the Long Beach Press-Telegram. And we managed to get the details too, and a couple of photos to go along with the story. Los Al is not the team they were when we saw them at the Wooden Invitational. At least they weren't yesterday. There was Andrew Pleick, wearing some god-awful Hannibal Lechter device, and not shooting very well overall, even though he did score 21 points, a game high; unfortunately for the Griffins, no one else really had a good day; Ryan Keller had 11 points, but that was about it. Ron Prettymay only had 6, Sandi had 2, Brian Rakusin 2, and Howry 2.
Not that Chaminade had anyone who was really on fire. Scott Borchart did have 20 points, and really, he and J. J. Todd were the keys to this game, along with Cayce Cook, who managed 12 points, on some tremendous dribble drives and short range shooting. Cayce displayed great court presence, and he can handle the ball as well as any D-I prospect guard around; while he's getting some attention, we would expect some mid D-I's to start to get involved in the spring.
Simply put, Los Al really didn't have any answer inside for
Scott Borchart or Todd. Scott scored 12 points in the first half as Chaminade (14-3) took
a
27-17 halftime lead. Chris Canoles also played very well, and this football prospect also
managed 14 rebounds and 5 points. Los Alamitos cut the lead to four late in the
third quarter on a three-point play by Ryan Keller and a three-pointer by Pleick, but the
Eagles' lead was back to 11 midway through the fourth quarter, and it really didn't take
too much to finish off the Griffins.
For Chaminade, Ryan Arceo had only 3 points, but played well; likewise, Robbie Tanoyue only had 3 points but played better than his final scoring, and he had about 4 steals that we counted. Clarence Mitchell didn't really impact much, but we think if Chaminade would run more of the offense through him he could be a big time scorer. Darren Tarlow did his usual good job on defense, hustling and hammering Pleick, and he also managed 4 points.
