Jason Day: Nike Dream Classic
In Pictures: Redondo v. Inglewood--(Jan. 26, 1999)
Ok, so we're a little late with this one, but hey, when you have to wait for genius, it can sometimes take a long time. That's what we were doing waiting for Jason Day, and really Larry Gray to develop the pictures he took a week ago Monday at Pauley Pavilion. This was one of the first games of the day, and Larry and Jason got their just before the game, in time to take some really impressive photos. Much more impressive than our dinky little digital Sony Mavica, which is handy but not nearly as sharp as Larry's stuff. Both of them were seated just under one of the baskets, clicking and snapping away as Inglewood and Redondo. Here's Jason's report and Larry's pictures. You had to be there, but really, this is the next best thing.

REDONDO BEATS INGLEWOOD

My absolute favorite prep basketball event had it's 1999 incarnation this past Monday at Pauley Pavillion. The 5th Annual Nike Dream Classic, formerly called the Martin Luther King Classic (The MLK for short), offers matchups that would not normally happen at any other time during the season. This year's lineup featured some of the most outstanding teams in the area. Our colleagues at SoCalHoops covered this event extensively and they have other detailed reports on each game. We will present each contest in pictures.

This one featured Redondo Union High against Inglewood High. It was the first game of the day but a compelling one. Inglewood had just defeated Redondo two days prior at the 1st Annual Double Pump Hoop Challenge held at Cal State Dominguez. In that one, Inglewood pretty much had their way and clearly appeared to be the superior team. What a difference two days can make. Redondo came in fired up and pretty much manhandled the Sentinels in this one.
Redondo's John Kim (5pts. 3
boards, 2 assists) doubled by
Skip Esene and Isaac.
Zahn shot 8 for 17 (5 of 7 from
the line) and played 31 min.
Here he calls for the ball against
Esene
Marvin Isaac for the layin
White (6'5) skys to challenge
Felix (6'8)
What was the difference? Well...while it is true
that Redondo top gun, Andrew Zahn got far more touches in this on than he did on Saturday, and it is true that his sidekick, Walter White, was much more involved than he was on Saturday, the bottom line was fairly obvious....Inglewood shot 18.6 percent from the field in this game. Redondo shot forty two six. End of story...game over...period.
Redondo beat em 55-41, Zahn had 21 pts. 16
boards, and 4 blks....White...18 pts., 13 rebounds, 3 assists. Inglewood had two players in double
figures...Sandy Fletcher with 11, and Brian Taylor with 10.
Other Inglewood numbers? Taylor - 4 for 17; Fletcher 4 for 22; Isaac 1 for 16; Esene 3 for 18; Felix 2 for 11...nuff said.
Inglewood's Brian Taylor
shows the nice form. . . not many fell for the talented Junior in this one however.
Under the boards was a dangerous
place in this game...here Fletcher (4) appears to get beheaded as Zahn challenges.
