Nike Dream Classic: Redondo
Beats Inglewood--(Jan. 18, 1999)

As good as Inglewood played on Saturday, that's how good Redondo was in this game, which the Sea Hawks won handily 55-41.  In the first quarter as Inglewood trailed by a score of 15-5 with about 2 minutes to play, and it was just a harbinger of things to come as terrible shooting (18.6% in the game, on 13 for 70 field goals) just killed any hope the Sentinels had of repeating the win they got against Redondo at the adidas Double Pump Hoop Challenge. Zahn and Walter White ran some great stuff, lots of pick and roll plays, and Redondo led 17-9 with about a minute to play in the first quarter. But then Titus Hunt picked up his third foul of the game, and had to sit as Adam Zahn came in. Inglewood managed to hit against two more times in the quarter, and at the end of the first the score was 15-17.

In the second quarter, Inglewood went with a small lineup, and it really hurt as Redondo broke out to an 18-23 lead with about three minutes to play.   But Pat Roy then came to his senses and put in Skip Esene and Noel Felix again who were sitting for most of the first quarter, and with about 2:40 to play in the half, the Sentinels had cut it to two, 21-23. With about 20 seconds, Sandy Fletcher let a floater go in the lane, missed but then got his own rebound, to cut the lead to two, and Redondo went into the locker room with a 2 point lead 25-23.

Zahn was playing about as well as we've seen him in a while. In the first half, Walter White had 12, Zahn 6, and Taylor led the Sentinels with 7.

In the third quarter, Noel hit first on a floater in the lane and then Zahn came right back and then Felix came right back with a layup to tie the score at 27.  Noel picked up his third foul, but Roy left him in, at least until Inglewood picked up the lead at 30-32 with about 2:30 to play in the third quarter. With about a minute to play, Zahn tied it up again. The matchups, at least in the this quarter were pretty even with Zahn on Esene, Dijon on Jenkins, and Kim on Brandon Scott, and the most interesting was the matchup between two little points, Kim and Scott, who manage to just chase each other like two little flies. At the end of the quarter, Zahn hit a beautiful turnaround drop step in the lane, and brought the score to 33-38.  Zahn did it again to start off the fourth quarter, and with about 6:32 after both teams traded posssessions, the score was 40-33 Redondo.

As we said before, as good as Inglewood was on Saturday, that's how good Redondo was today, and they just kept Zahn pounding it in, blocking shots, and generally handling a flat Sentinel team, Redondo easily won, 55-41.  Not surprisingly, Zahn, who finished with 21 points and three blocks, was named the "Los Angeles Times Player of the Game" (hey, we figured we'd give them the free plug for all the work Gary Klein and Sondheimer have been doing).  The full scoring in the game for Inglewood was Brian Taylor 10 points and 4 rebounds, Sandy Fletcher 11 points 3 rebounds and 2 assists, Lenny Brown had 2 points, Marvin Isaacs had 2 points 5 rebounds and 1 assist, Skip Esene ;had 7 points, and 8 rebounds, Gerrod Jenkins had 4 points and 7 rebounds, and Noel Felix was limited to just 5 points, but he did manage 5 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

Redondo's stats tell the story:  Walter White had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Zahn had 21 points, 17 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots (oops we were off on our count, we had him with 3), John Kim had 5 points and 2 assists,  dijon Thompson had 4 points and 6 rebounds.

A great game, one which keeps Redondo's hopes alive in league.
